If a boy is 5 yrs old and will be in Kindergarten soon and he has a 14 year old sister (honor student), do you feel they should have to go to bed at the same time?

Very thankful for the answers. These are my grandchildren. My daughter doesn't value my opinion and I just feel sorry that my granddaughter doesn't have any more priviledges than her 5 yr old brother. Her mother says she has to go to bed even EARLIER than the little guy because she doesn't go to sleep right away. I just don't think it's fair. She is a good student and a good girl. This brother is her only sibling but they are just too far apart in age to watch the same tv shows, play the same X Box games and go to bed at the same time (or her even earlier than him!). Thanks.

I know the Mother has the last say when it comes to her kids,but- -
I feel the same as you. She needs some 14 year old time of her own, and an hour later bed time just may do it for her, (my personal feeling). Hang in there Gramma.

Uh, no. My 7 year old and 10 year old don't even have the same bed time.
My 7 year old and 4 year old both have a 9pm bedtime. My 10 year old's bedtime got bumped to 9:30 last fall when she started 4th grade. I plan to bump each of the kids at 4th grade like I did her, but she'll likely have a later one before that point, like 6th grade. This year it will be 9:30 still.
I don't feel a 14 year old and a 5 year old should have the same bed time because they are so different in ages. Most 14 year olds have a 10-11pm bedtime, which I feel is too late for a 5 year old. Your 5 year old would be tired in the morning. If you give them both an earlier bed time, you are treating your 14 year old like she is 5, and she will resent you for it.

I have a 14 year old and an 8 year old. During the school year, the 8 year old goes to bed at 9 and the 14 year old goes to bed at 10. I only adjust bedtimes if someone has trouble getting up in the morning. So far so good.
My 14 year old does have to get up quite a bit earlier than the 8 year old, though, because her school starts much earlier. If she didn't have to get up at 6 a.m., I'd let her stay up even later.
Hope this helps.

no way if i had kids that age the young one would be in bed by 7pm and the 14 yr old by 10:30 the young one just has to deal with the fact that he's still a little kid and the older one shouldnot have to go to bed that early just to keep the other one happy if thats the case at your house. The 14 yr old needs to be treated a little bit like an adult , and with respect.

No, if you do that it will harbor a dislike of the 5 year old by the older one, the 5 year old should be in bed at least 2-3 hours before the 14 year old. Give them a sense of age and responsiblity of getting older.

You are right, this 14 year old girl will rebel after a while, she is not far from 16 years old, how can she be treated like a 5 year old child. I wonder if both children are the mothers natural children, why does she treat the girl so unfairly.

I know this trick.. it's called.. mom sends all the kids to bed at the same time so she can have "mom time". if all the kids are in bed early.. moms day ends and she is now kid free and able to do as she wants without interuptions.. it's a great game.. just wait until the players get a bit older...
g-ma.. you got your head on right.. take the kids with you once in awhile and give the girl little extras that she doesnt get with her mom.. let her know she is older and more responsable.. deserving of it.. God bless you for noticing.

No, the older kid still needs a good night's sleep but it's not likely you will convince her to start that at 8:30. Older kids have homework and other activities that take some of their evening time, so it is reasonable to assign different bedtimes to each child.
