Common practices are many but a few worth mentioning are:-
1) sitting too clsoe to the TV
2) reading lying down, and book held too clsoe to the eyes.
3) reading in a dim or insufficient lighting environment
4) reading in a shaky moving environment
5) playing in a sandy and windy place.
6) rubbing instead of washing your eyes
and many more.

Using mascara or liquid eyeliner that is more than 6 months old as it is a breeding ground for germs that can infect the eye.
Not throwing away all eye makeup that has come into contact with an infected eye as there can be cross-contamination is another.
Not cleaning or properly caring for contact lenses; went to college with a girl that would take her lens out of her eye, put it in her mouth to get it wet, then put it back in, then complain about getting eye infections all of the time.
Rubbing our eyes when we have allergies and they are itchy instead of using eye drops; another girl in college rubbed a whole in her eye doing this.

looking into bright light EX: the sun, or entering a dark room and have the lights switched on suddenly
peeling onions(because when u peel an onion it sends vapors into the air around it and when these vapors come in contact with your eyes, they cause irritations)
looking at the spark of a welding machine(very bright, can cause retina damage)
spending time in dusty areas or mines( your tears will try to clean the surface of your eyes but if there are to many particles in the atmosphere, like dust or coal dust, it may result in eye irritations or tear gland affections)

Straining your eyes if you need glasses and haven't had an eye test recently.
Wearing someone elses glasses that aren't right for your eyes.
Not wearing sunglasses whilst skiing: too bright.
Airconditioning: dries them out.
Doing a goofy face and going cross eyed too many times! :)
