Securing the Borders and Reforming Immigration Without Amnesty

“Our plan puts border security first and cracks down on those who knowingly hire illegal workers, but it also recognizes the need for a temporary worker program that operates without amnesty and harnesses the power of the private sector to avoid creating a huge new government bureaucracy.”

-Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison and Rep. Mike Pence

That hits ALL of my checkpoints... secure border, no amnesty, no benefits beyond education and medical benefits (that they must contribute to), strict follow-up. I really like the Good Neighbor SAFE Visa program as well. It will give them longer to establish themselves. But my favorite part is the mandatory English study... MUST learn the language.

What I don't see is anything addressing the babies that have been born here to existing illegals (the so-called "anchor babies"). If they have children that were born here, are they exempt? And if they maintain their citizenship to their home country, their children should not be automatically American citizens. Other countries are putting the kibosh on that as well (Ireland, for one).

Once they address that (babies born in America are not automatically US citizens if parents are not legal), it would get my vote immediately and any Congressman who backs it would get my vote.

Any congressman who doesn't back it is afraid they'll lose the Hispanic vote, which is no way to run a country. Our elected leaders should have more backbone to do what's right for our COUNTRY, not their office.

I strongly agree with the border security and cracking down on employers hiring illegals. We also have to addres the people or businesses that will knowingly rent housing to them. (Assisting in a criminal act?)

I also think that laws should be changed so that children of illegals born in the US will NOT be US citizens, but considered illegal.

I think this would stop SOME traffic of the illegals coming here, and SOME would leave.

As far as the illegals who remain, we should give them the opportunity to stay, but they have to earn it.

There should be a CONDITIONAL amnesty offered.

They must learn basic English.
They must learn some American history and culture.
They must be financially dependent, i.e., either employed or have a financial sponsor.
They must swear their allegiance to America and be signed up for the draft. (Within the draft eligibility guidelines)
They will have a FELONY conviction on their records so they can never posses a gun or vote, even if they become citizens.

They must do this within a time frame, such as 1 year. If they don't, or at least show effort after the time frame, they will be deported.

This will only work if we protect our borders. If we keep allowing them in, it's just a waste of time!

Pence's guest worker program exceeds even the Senate's guest worker plan because there are NO NUMERICAL LIMITS for at least three years. Everyone in the world, including illegal aliens in the United States, is invited to get a guest worker visa, called a "W" visa. Guest workers are immediately allowed to apply for a green card and as long as a guest worker's green card application is pending, his W visa is indefinitely renewable. Thus, this plan is nothing more than a back door amnesty.

I'm with Hayleylov on this. Sounds like another form of amnesty to me. As well, how would the government make sure people don't stay after their time expires? It will be just like all the current Visa overstay illegals. I like the border security and the cracking down on employers of illegals, but I don't trust that they would really crack down on employers, or find and deport visa or guest worker overstays.

Haylov said it just right.

I think Pence is a typical politician and he is saying what he thinks people want to hear but actually I think his "plan" will be amnesty in the long run.
