You'll need to moisten his kibble, or feed canned.

Soft tinned food should be fine and porridge is good too, my 17 old dog eats that and she is quite short on teeth, she really loves the porridge best

Porridge is good, but not long term as it doesn't contain all the vitamins and minerals that an older dog needs to thrive, you would be better using a complete dog food, the kibble type is better to use, soaking it in boiling water, then allowing it to cool thoroughly before giving it to your dog.

canned food is actually soft enough for him to get down safely. Just don't buy the kind with chunks or bits of meat. Also you can add some canned broth to his dry food and allow to sit and soak up. It will also soften sufficiently for him to get down. Too bad you didn't brush his teeth. Wonder if that would have prevented this for him.

He may be fine on his old food, I have known dogs with no teeth to continue enjoying dry food, as hard as it is. As soon as he seems to have trouble with the food (not eating as much or taking ages over meals) change it for something softer, but until then let him eat what he always has, it may never happen.

his bark really was worse than his bite

he will be fine on soft(ish) food, have you ever seen a baby who has no teeth eat toast? the gums are tougher than you think, and he certainly will not starve. your vet should be able to offer good advice.
