Because no religion satisfies every one.

If a religion is good for some good people
It'll not be acceptable for some bad people

If a religion is usefull for bad people
Good people won't accept it

If a religion is good for Poor ones
The rich wouldn't accept it easily

If a religion is in favour of rich people
poor people would never like it.

And this story goes on and on and on................

And every Community creates/beleives in a religion, that suits to them (or most of people among them)

If some can't create a new religion, he/she tries to modify it's current religion to his/her requirements,
and as the time goes by, this modified religion becomes (some talented person/people makes it) an absolutely new religion

An other reason for raise in number of religions is low availability of good preachers.
When a town/community doesn't has a good preacher for long time, people of that community becomes blind about religion, they would beleive in any thing that is told to them in good manner. And some times this also ends into a new religion.

And now, there is hardly any way to know, which religion is true?
Well, I respect all religions, because a(any) religion gives a hope to its beleiver. Give a hope to it's beleiver when he/she has lost all/any mortal hopes.
And also most of religion teaches it's beleivers to help each other, to prevent crime, to make/keep peace.

It's up to us(me and you):
Whether we follow our religion or not?
How much of religious terms do we follow?
Do we really beleive in our religion or we just like to be counted as a beleiver of some religion?
A lot of questions can be put here, but time is short.

And About GOD!
I don't know whether there is only one or multiple GODS.
Because I don't have any way to examine it.
All I know in this regard (as it have been told to me since my birth) is that: There is only one GOD

But,
How would I know:
GOD exists or not?
And if there is,
Is it just one, or morethan one?
and if they are more than one,
Then how many of them?
To which GOD, I belong?
Are they friendly to each other, or they like to defeat each other?

WOW,
This is a long story, perhaps it's end-less
However, if some one feel he/she can help/guide me in this regard
Help me, I am help-less
Please please help me........

From the several answers just given, you learn that there are many other gods besides the God you believe in, and also that there are some people who do not believe in any Creator or Almighty God i.e. the atheists, such as the Buddhists. So, it's a an eye-opening opportunity to see that there are many religions professing different views. In your case, you were born and brought up and educated and preached that there can be no true religion other than your own. Start thinking as an independent, mature ,rational and logical person ! You will find out that's the best gift you give to yourself as a human.

There is indeed only one God. He comes in different forms and variations depending upon the way you believe in Him and worship Him. When he gave humanity free thought, he also allowed him to choose what kind of God he would believe. He even allowed men to consider the existence or non existence of God. If he imposes us one religion, then there would be conflicts among humanity just like what is happening between the believers of the bible and the koran. Even among christians, there is also a rift which sect is better. To end this, let us think of our green earth but in it are various forms of islands, oceans, mountains, race, forms of government etc. If you believe God exists, then there will be religions which would always claim that it is only through and by their religion that you can talk to your God.

Well, the polytheistic religions will say many paths to the G-d. The monotheists, some say one G-d, the rest are the "devil" fooling humans. I say it's a function of culture. Why are there so many cultures? People were not always so connected. People used to be geographically isolated. This meant that they independently developed many cultures. Cultures make civilisations and society. From these come religions.

Not all religions believe in only one God. The Hindus for example believe in hundreds of gods. So did the Romans and the Greeks.

Because to understand anything, you must first find the origin of it.
Back in the beginning, there was Cain and Abel.
One worshipped God by a sacrifice of a lamb...with blood.
The other worshipped by offering fruits.
Two religions.
But which did God accept?
There was two seeds. Because God said it when he cursed the Serpent.
Abel died and Seth took his place. Seth and his people called on the name of God, and lived as simple shepherds.
Cain and his people built civilisation and science.
Two seeds...two lines.
Cain's people did not have a revelation from God, on how to worship...otherwise, how did Abel know what God required as a sacrifice, and Cain didn't?
Many religions comes from confusion by lack of revelation from God.
Only God's children know what He says.

Simply because there are so many people with different ideas. People who have the same thought process make 1 group & a religion emerges. This shows the complexity of our minds.

It's simple. Hinduism and other religions contemporary to early Judaism , worshipped hundreds, if not thousands of gods. In Roman times, the Emporer couldn't sign a treaty withoout butchering a sow , reading bones, reflecting on the Zodiac, reading animal entrails, and other auguries. It got to be too much, when all you have is chocolate mousse on the menu,, it's sometimes better to just have an easy slice of bread and butter. Monotheism was attractive, in large part, because of its mere simplicity.
