DANGER, DANGER, DANGER! That is one of the few toyota engines that has had trouble. It had trouble with oil sludging problems. Check for a recall or a Technical Service Bulletins.

Same car, similiar situation. When I run my a/c, especially during my daily afternoon stop and go commute, I try and leave off or turn down the a/c for 5 minute intervals. That keeps the temp halfway. I also add fuel injector cleaner to every other full tank of gas, and/or before roadtrips; that helps that sluggish feeling to me anyway. When I first got my car, it always overheated, but after I replaced the fan and installed a new radiator (myself), I've since only found a fluke or two due to burned out fuses. Hope I could help! Good luck!

Could be many things. Start by checking the radiator and the cooling fans. I would guess the radiator is plugged and is not flowing correctly. That should not effect the acceleration unless the car is over heated to the point you blew a head gasket.
Does the car use water? Is their oil in the coolant. Sluggish could be a blocked catalytic converter.

wow ,,some of these answer,s,,,,any way,,there is a separate cooling fan for the air conditioner system that help,s cool the motor down,,if this is not working the engine will over heat a little,,also a very dirty cooling system will cause it to do the same thing, you can check the cooling fan by turning on the air and open the hood and se if the fan is running,,if it is not,,there is a fuse for it,,check it,,also there is a relay unit for it,,usually located in under the hood in a row of relay,s,,and it will be marked,,which one it is,,other than that,,the fin,s on your water pump may be getting wore down enough,,so that it don't circulate the coolant as good as it used to ,,people used to think if the water pump ,,was bad it would leak,,not so these day,s they can be bad and not leak,,i own a repair shop and do this for a living,,i see it all the time,,i hope this help,s.

listen to hear if the radiator fan comes on when you put on the AC there is a relay that starts the fan. Other wise the fan comes on when it reaches a certain temperature, it will even stay on after you shutdown car. if all that is working then the radiator is clogged, it is aluminum and plastic, dont waste any money trying to fix it it is disposable, they do make brass replacements much better. For the sluggishness get the engine scoped that is the best way to troublesoot that.
