I have a 2002 Hyundai Excel with automatic transmission. It has always shifted pretty roughly but now even in low gears it really kind of jumps when shifting--that's the way I describe it. Tonight I tried putting it in reverse; first it didn't respond at all, but then it really jerked back and surprised me. I'm concerned. Does anyone out there have experience with this in Hyundais or any knowledge that can help me know what the problem is and how serious?

I have to say this to the others answers ( you don't know jack)
Ok Here is information you can use( not all the bull S&^%
First check the trans lever.
To do this start the car in park and on level ground. Warm up the car 10 minets.
Next pull the stick and check the color.
It should be red, not pink, or brown
Next wipe it off and reinsert it back into trans and check it.
If it is low add DEXTRON 3 till it reads full
Note: Do not over fill.
If it is ok then smell the fluid
It should not smell burnt or have a redish brown color.

If it all checks out, the it is likly the trans is going or gone.

But judging by what you have said the level is very low

Try discussing this with a Hyundai dealer, if there is a fault that is a manufacturing defect then Hyundai may contribute up to 5 years old

You could have a torque converter going bad, transmission control module needed re-programed if equipped, wear in the differential assuming front wheel drive, or too fast an engine idling condition that feels real jerky at engagement. It needs checked out and perhaps there may be a hidden warranty on it, check the NHTSA site for known recalls.

some vehicles have magnets on the end of their transmission dipsticks to see if your transmission is going south...

if theirs metal shavings on it, somethings not working right.

I don't know if yours does or not, I dont' work on hyundai's...

make sure you have transmission fluid in it *well enough fluid*
I don't know TON about transmissions but I do know if the fluid is low they don't work good at all and if you keep it low it will make them tear up.
