Doberman or Bull Mastiff. Rotweilers can be really good with kids, but they can also turn on them if the kids pull on their ears or something. They can get pretty aggressive sometimes even while playing.

Also look into St. Bernards. They're huge and make good guard dogs, but are great with kids! They're really gentle and protective yet are able to scare off any one that comes into the house uninvited. (My parents had a St. Bernard when I was born, and we just bought another one 4 years ago).

Great Danes, Sheepdogs, Labrador Retrievers (Golden or Chocolate), Malteses, Samoyed, and more are also some really great breeds. Don't narrow your options too much. Check out http://www.terrificpets.com/

I really think a doby would be the best... My parents had one when i was first born and she was good around me.. I've had 2 sense then and have one now... they are very good dogs.. but they can also be very tempermental... I also have a rottie that is a very good dog... The doberman is more protective though... With the whole cat situation the dog just has to get use to the cat being there... cats and dogs can be very good friends.. you just have to let them get to know each other...!!
Good luck and I hope I helped a little!!

Out of those three, I would suggest the Bull Mastiff. I love these dogs. I raise Boxers myself, and they are excellent with the kids and the cat, and even the rabbit. They are loyal and make good guard dogs. I feel for anybody that trys to get close to the kids...

I also have Saint Bernard's, and they are very good with the kids.

Out of those three, I suggest the mastif. But if you really want a good guard dog that is loyal to the family and is good with children, then you need a German Shepherd. And dont get an adult dog. get a puppy and give it plenty of time with your family so it will establish a firm bond with them. They'll guard even when they're still puppies. Mine is 6 months old and has been scaring people away form our home for a few months now. Around me and my family, he's just a big baby. He thinks he's a lap dog like our shi-tzu. Just imagine, you sit down in your favorite recliner and your 50 pound puppy jumps up on your lap and turns you over. (It happened to my husband on Sunday) It was so funny to watch.

My oldest daughter and her husband had a Rottweiler when their youngest was born. The dog was something like five years old at the time, but took to the baby like it was hers. She never tried to play with the child. If she had, she'd have trampled her. But, where ever the baby was, up to the time she was 4 and dog was hit by a truck and killed, the dog was no more than a yard away. As far as cats are concerned, for all I know Rottweilers eat cats three meals a day. Good luck.

I've had Dobermans since1977 and have had the best dogs I will always have a dodie or two for the rest of my life . my 4 year old grandson and yogi are the best of friends. I dare anyone to come near this child when yogi around.yogi gets his ears pulled, eyes poked lips pulled so he can show his big teeth gets ridden like a horse. poor dog but he loves every minute of it. another dog that is often overlooked is the ridgeback my daughter had one she raised with her kids and he never left their side. he would always put him self between the kids and who ever was approaching even family members. he was fine once he knew who it was. they have short hair and are very laid back they don't need allot of exercise

I have 2 Pit Bulls (11 & 4 y/o) and a Rat Terrier/Min Schnauzer. Both are excellent w/ my girls and the cat.

My motherly instincts tell me that all three of those dogs are not the best pet for your children and cats. All of those dogs are known for agressive tendencies. If you want a large dog with protective instincts, get a lab or golden retriever. They are large, protective of their families and great with family friends, children, and other animals.

ALWAYS REMEMBER BIGGER THE DOG THE MORE WORK. I SUGGEST A GERMAN SHEPARD IF U GET ONE AS A PUPPY UT WILL GROW UP WITH THE CAT AND YOUR KIDS AND THEY ARE EXCELTNE GUARD DOGS I HAVE HAD MINE FOR ALMOST 3 MONTHS AND SINCE THE DAY I GOT HER AT 3 MONTHS OLD SHE HAS BEEN PROTECTIVE OF MY 2 YEAR OLD AND I. THEY HAVE VERY GOOD INSTINCT AND ARE VERY FAST LEANERS AND VERY EASY TO TRAIN! SHE GETS ALONG GREAT WITH MY CAT AND MY DAUGHTER CAN TRY TO ROLL AROUND ON THE FLOOR AND WRESTLE WITH HER AND BE A TYPICAL 2 YEAR OLD AND SHE HAS NEVER EVEN TRIED TO NIP HER. THEY REQUIR A GOOD AMOUNT OF EXCERCISE THEY ARE KNOWN FOR WORKING HARD AND PLAYING HARDER BUT THEY GROW INTO YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS. I GOT MINE FOR PROTECTION AND SO FAR SHE HAS BEEN GREAT. NO MATTER WHAT U GET IF U WANT IT TO GET ALONG WITH CATS GET IT AS A PUPPY AND ANY DOG THAT IS FAMOUS FOR HUNTING IS MORE LIKELY TO WANT TO HUNT YOU CAT. AND A GOOD PUPPY CLASS HELPS ALOT.
