Human encroachment on their habitat has forced wild animals to concentrate in undeveloped areas which are getting less and less each day. The high concentration of deer and the lack of predatory animals creates a cycle where they will eventually starve. The Division of Wildlife has a formula to determine how many deer a given area can support and sells hunting licenses to thin the herds so they all don't starve. The deer that are shot (harvested) die a quick, relatively painless death, and there is food for those that survive the hunting season. If there is a high concentration of does in a specific area, DOW will sometimes issue antler less permits, but mostly it is the males that are targets. The money collected from the sale of licenses and permits is used to promote and improve wildlife management. I do not speak for corrupt officials in the government or for hunters without ethics.

Most hunters I know are a bit of an enigma (including myself). Most hunters love the beauty of deer as you do, but then they will kill them at the same time.
Many hunters spent time and money to feed them and improve their habitat to make their lives better, but that is only part of the equation.
Deer are intelligent, but they do not have a concept of population control. With a lack of natural predators and with a deer's ability to adapt, they will breed until the land can not support the population and they are wiped out by disease or starvation.
By killing deer, I am providing myself and others with fresh meat, free of drugs and hormones. I am also helping keep the deer population under control to protect the deer and other people.
At the end of the day, I know that a deer has a chance to out smart me and live another day. On the other hand, the beef on my plate didn't have the luxery of living outside of a cattle yard and had no chance of living any longer than its owner says it will.

first of all, it is deer, not deers, and people shoot them for food. If there was no hunting of the deer, they would over populate and move into the cities where they would ruin gardens both flower and vegetable, and would wander out into streets and get run over more. When the population get too big, they start getting sick, and then start to die off anyway. It is far better to hunt them for food, then to just let them die of over population...

because for some it is a sport and it is to reduce the deer population, instead of a car hitting a deer, would be fatal esp. in wooded areas,
people kill these deers becasue they attack people or turn into road kill causing an accident.
It not like their an ENDANGERED SPECIES, to me they are like rats, mice who multiply rapidly.
they are big pest animals.

Growing up in the mountains it is a way of life. Venison is good when cooked right and venison jerky is the best. I don't believe in killing deer for sport, only if you will eat the meat and use the hide.

your right we shouldnt kill deer we should just let them take over and then once they eat all the food in the area we can watch them die really slowely of hunger. if they arent hunted they get out of control. also most hunters either eat the meat or they donate it to food banks.

I dunno. Personally I think animal activists would rather the deer die a slow, painful death by getting hit by a car or being mutilated by a predator.
A serious hunter will plan on the 1st shot being an instant kill.

Two basic reasons. For sport and for food. Any decent hunter though in it for the sport will also consume his kill and use as much of it as possible for display, clothing, etc.
Those who hunt for food only are typically total consumers and let nothing go to waste.

well for many reasons...one being for food, population control if we did not hunt them there population would explode causing starvation, famine, disease which would lead to the destruction and then there would not be any...some where along your ancestors hunted. it is much better for you than McDonalds. would you rather have people hunt or see them sick and dying transferring disease to other animals causing a chain reaction in the animal world.

Pure , natural food. They are my favorite ,too, in a stew or nice thick gravy. If we aren't supposed to eat animals, then why are they made out of meat?
