Sometimes in women, the early signs of a heart attack mimic those of heartburn. If your mother is past menopause and has not eaten something specific that might be causing the heartburn, you may want to talk to a doctor or visit an emergency room, especially if she has high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smokes, or has other known risk factors for heart disease.

If you're pretty sure it's just digestive, try some soda crackers. Milk can actually aggravate the situation.

Some home remedies for common stomach aches and heart burn are:

Mix a about 1 tsp of baking soda in an 8 oz glass of water and drink it.

Make a hot ginger tea from your spice cabinet or drink ginger ale...chammomile tea may help too....

However remember that home remedies are NOT a substitute for medical care.

Plus, I don't mean to frighten you but heartburn can be a sign of a heart attack in a woman. It may be safest to phone a doctor or go to the emergency room if you can.

I hope she feels better soon, and she is lucky to have a child who cares for her like you do.

Take her to a doctor. Don't try to find answers on a chatroom like this. A doctor will be able to help you find good medicine if necessary. If cost of medicine is an issue, there are many government programs that can help.

If you have some baking soda, I believe there is directions on the box on how to use it as an antacid.

BAKING SODA
Ingredients: Sodium bicarbonate U.S.P.

Directions: As an antacid: effective as an antacid to alleviate heartburn, sour stomach and/or acid indigestion. Use 1/2 tsp. baking soda in 1/2 cup of water every 2 hours up to a maximum of 8 dosages. Do not use if your are on a sodium restricted diet.

Depends on why your mother has heartburn. If she has simple indigestion, and does not have any heart problems or high blood pressure, bicarbonate soda might help. The instructions for using it are generally on the box. If she is having chest pain and it is not indigestion, get up and get her to a doctor NOW. If she is pregnant, she needs to contact her ob/gyn ASAP/

She should be checked by a doctor. It's likely that it is indigestion, but several other more serious things could be wrong. For instance, heart attack, gall bladder attack, hiatal hernia, acid reflux, etc.

Milk usually helps, or something to neutralize the acid, like ice cream or other dairy products. Can you get some tums at the store?
