It depends on how bad the stress level is. If it is common every day type stress, I pick up a book and read, play some guitar, answer stupid questions with stupid responses, or just listen to music with a cup of tea. If we are talking about heavy stress, the kind that you lose sleep over, I need to do something drastic. Usually, I will pick up a new hobby or sport. Just recently, I picked up golf. Something about having to focus to learn something new takes my mind off of whatever is stressing me out. Also, when I return to my stressed life, I am able to handle it better and put it into perspective after I've driven myself crazy trying to learn something new.

Lately feeling stressed over if my ex will reconcile with me, and can't seem to get him out of my head, sleeping seems to only do the trick. But I can't sleep all the time, so when I'm awake, I try to distract myself by doing something to help myself feel pretty, or spend time with people, or shoot darts. Stress can actually help me win dart games with hot shots! LOL!
Or play some heavy s-s-a metal that I make up via guitar at open mic. Playing rock/metal helps me release some steam.

I run. The higher the stress, the harder the run.
When I finish, I can't remember the stress.
After my body normalizes, I have a glass of wine.

I tend to go out for a long jog. For me, I just felt that when I jog, I won't need to think of anything else other than what is infront of me. This is a very good destress technique.
