I've been there a few times. It's on my short list of places I'd live willingly, if I weren't happy enough in San Diego. Indeed, I'll be visiting there again in a day or two. (I'm on the east coast at the moment; an artifact of my girlfriend's need to take vacations.)

Littleton is a town, not a city. It feels 'towny,' but not 'hick towny'. You can find books easily enough, and there is a college not far off that supplies youthful hormones to the town as a whole. The river that runs alongside the town is rather modest, so there is no real riverfront; this bothers me, as I like the seedier parts of towns. Alas, the town is a little tidier and more orderly than I'd like. The people (the obvious locals) seem to be tolerant of strangers--which makes sense, as tourists (strangers) supply revenue the town needs to survive. There isn't any obvious cause for the town to exist now, but it seems to be making it as 'a college town' and/or 'a tourist town.' That means you can probably shoehorn yourself in as a working part of the community.

Take the time and visit. It's a longish drive, of course, but the only knowledge about real places that counts is real experience of them. Put on the aloha shirt, the short pants, the ugly straw hat and the ridiculous sunglasses, and go.

Was thru there in '88. Small town, homey all-American. Wouldn't live there 'cause it snows (I live near San Francisco) but it was very beautiful and the folks are polite.
