My parents bought a betamax VCR back in the day and it proved to be the wrong choice - as a kid I could never find anywhere that rented betamax videos!

I think blu ray might win the battle because the PS 3 will have it included, the Xbox 360 will have HD DVD separate as a add on. I only bring up the game consoles because it was PS 2 that first bought a DVD player into peoples homes in the form of the PS 2.before THEN NO ONE COULD AFFORD A 1,000 DOLLAR DVD PLAYER. Sony opened the market and i believe they will again.. Either way i say wait a year until the recorders come out and keep an eye on tech news and home theater forums before you dive in so u won't be the kid with the beta max tape again..
Since i have an xbox 360 i will buy the add on just to check it out for HD DVD. and compare it to the blu ray

Monkey, I would go with the Blue Ray player. I might be beneficial for you to wait off purchase for 3-4 months because prices are expected to drop by $200 or so.

Blue ray is backed by some big players in the Industry including:
LG
Mitsubishi
Panasonic
Philips
Pioneer
Samsung
Sharp
Sony

Like others have stated before, the PS3 will have blue ray, so most likely the market will head that way.

Also, I have a Sony Betamax in perfect condition. It was about $400 when we purchased it but now it will sell for about $900 on ebay. sometimes, failed trends can make big $$. Best of luck.

First thing you have to remember is just because the PS3 is going to have Blue Ray does not mean it will win. PS2 did not give the ultimate life to the standard DVD. So that thought process should be out. You have to look at the overall market. Blue Ray has better resolution for now, but it is two to three times as much and the DVD movies are more expensive. HD-DVD is only 1080i. Mind you the life of a DVD player as we know it today when from standard DVD player, to progressive scan, to up convert DVD. There is a lot of ways this can go. The key is who markets their product the best. Yes those of you who mentioned the backing of major players with Blue Ray are right. The only thing you have to look at is how many of those players to date have either postponed their production or have gone back in to modify it?

Too soon to tell. This is my answer to a similar question:

Current opinion seems to favor Blu-Ray for picture quality; see
http://www.projectorcentral.com/blu-ray_...
HD-DVD is available now for about $500, and several movie titles are available. Blu-Ray seems to have some catching up to do. In my opinion it is too early to jump in unless you really crave HD movies. However, the results from HD-DVD are spectacular. It has been reported that some manufacturers are working on a player that will play both formats. This may be the best solution, since the studios backing Blu-Ray may release their films only in the Blu-Ray format, and those backing HD-DVD may do likewise. Therefore, to be able to play any movie that is released, you need a both players or one player that will do both. The HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray war may never have a clear winner if a universal player becomes available. This was not possible for VHS/Beta, but is for DVD.

Are you all nuts!!!!! Sony's Blue Ray is crap, and I like Sony. If your dumb enough to spend 2 to 3 times more for the Sony, then knock yourself out. As far as BIG companies backing Blue Ray. Think about this, MicroSoft is backing Toshiba's HD DVD and don't forget they invented DVD and Component Video, so consider the facts or wait and see. Its VHS vs BETA again, and the same will happen. Bye-bye Blue Ray.

Blu-Ray. With the sales of PS3 Blu-Ray will be clear winner and at least you get 1080p unlike HD-DVD which has 1080i for now. Also major companies are backing Blu-Ray so there's 80% chance i believe.

to early to tell because to date blue ray and hd dvd are still locked on the same issue of affordability, maybe in a year or two when their prices reached their bottom we can be able to gauge which is the better one i am sure their pricing will be the important issue rather than which play best in terms of quality, hope you can still wait because a blue ray dvd player costs $1000 dollar not counting the cost of the discs.

too early to choose but as of right now blu-ray is loosing despite the ability to display 1080p (reviews of disc are mostly ok but suffers from sharp to soft picture content on most disc reviewed not worth spending 1,000 bucks for that type of playback) & as for hd-dvd the slow loading time & 1080i seems to be the only drawback but the discs are mastered in 1080p ( they are doing what they did when dvd's 1st hit dvd's are mastered in 480p but you could only display 480i now 480p is the norm & as far as loading time that will improve as time go's on (they both will) but i think that price is going to be the key factor in this format war & if it keeps on this pace blu-ray will go the way of beta - wait a year or so & then you will see who has the upperhand
