Carry the bare essentials, that will be useful to you, when in need. Food in the form of dry crackers, biscuits, etc. Energy drinks [You can purchase them in powder form], a small torch light, warm clothes, a pocket knife and if you can get your hands on solid fuel, it'd do you good. If you have a GPRS phone, that would be a bonus to the above list.
I was with the military for 2.5 years. These were some of the essentials we had in our back pack. Hope this helps.

Passport, credit cards (found out the hard way that they don't like travelers checks in the middle-east), prescription medicine (make sure it is labeled with your name on it, essential documents (birth certificate, shot/medical records) and I would take the negatives (smaller and can carry more) of some of you favorite pictures of your family. There's a start.

I suggest you carry at least 2 forms of identification, a little cash, a credit card, and 7 days worth of any medications you take. You may wish to keep a slip of paper in your wallet with important contact information (such as addresses/phone numbers).

Essentials: clean underwear, i.d., and mad money. A cell phone can't hurt, either.
