Modesty is based off a virtue known as moderation. It’s a hard one to master but everyone should be trying for it.
Modesty is not just a good thing; it is a great and beautiful personality trait; one which requires a high level of self-control.
Modesty can be applied to many areas in life, such as consumption (how much you spend, how much you eat, how much salt you put on your food) to appearance (how you dress, how much makeup, how much bling).
When referred to, say, how a person dresses, modesty takes on this definition:
“Modesty is the art of being better than you look, rather than looking better than you really are.” (reread)
In general, by honoring moderation, and avoiding excess, it helps to preserve a thing called flavor in life and keeps your senses sharp and more sensitive to change.
It allows one to get the same "high" off of something without much of a increase in dosage so-to-speak.

Modest is a very good thing, unless it goes to prude-like extents. A person who is too modest can seem snooty and superior. Though a person who uses their modesty correctly is smart. Keeping something to the imagination is always important.

Modesty tends to work well in most situations, in both one's character and dress. The specific situation demands the amount of modesty that should be used.
Ex. Presentations at work demand less modesty.

As modest as you feel comfortable with. Leaving a little to the imagination is always a good thing.

don't be a prude, but modesty is good. It makes you an interesting person because people don't know enough about you and exactly what you look like. It makes you an enigma. Why not leave a little to the imagination?

Modest enough to refrain from wearing profanities on t-shirts, leather chaps with nothing else, thongs on the beach, and shirts that show the midriff. Yes, I think they're tacky.

Modesty is a good thing as long as it doesn't cross over to mousy.
