Have you ever looked into the kitchen in most chinese restaurants? If you did it wouldn't surprise you much to see a cockroach in your food, alot of them are unsanitary and the cooks look like car mechanics. Actually was walking past a really nice looking restaurant and saw one of the cooks step out the back door , hold one nostril and blow, then repeat with the other. Think he washed his hands after doing this? The cochroach may or may not have been on the restaurants menu, I see alot of pretty strange stuff, but I rarely get the food pictured on my plate when I get it. I'm not sure anyone would care if you complained, so in the future pick your restaurants carefully. I spent one evening in the hospital with an IV for a few hours after ingesting "Seafood" in Shenzhen. And once I was served a really bad smelling egg with a partly formed chick in it. Makes me appreciate the USDA stamp of approval we have in the states.

Point it out to the waiter; make sure there are witnesses and then tell them you are leaving. Don't return.

But really, it would be difficult to keep cockroaches out of any restaurant. I served with the USMC and did mess duty in South Carolina, where I saw some of the biggest cockroaches in my life. None of us got sick. As we speak a little one is crossing my desk, since I'm keeping food in the office.

We gotta eat; they gotta eat. Peaceful co-existence.

As cockroaches are known to carry all sorts of bacteria and disease on their bodies, I would strongly advise you not to eat it. You can no doubt get at least a refund if not more from the restaurant if you show it to them, because if they don't accomodate you, you can always report them to the health board which will shut down the restaurant.

Where is the restaurant? In China this is relatively common, although I hope not to see on a plate served to me. Food safety in China is very poor. Hardly anything is thrown away.

In the US, this is a big problem if there is a roach in a plate of food.

Different strokes for different folks...as it were.

Refuse the food, ask for a refund, and report the restaurant to the health dept. And don't go there again!

Grab it quick. It is a delicacy, and if you wait too long the others at your table will get it first.
If you really dont have the taste for them, then I suggest to pick it out and give it to the person you like the most at the table and put it on their plate. They will appreciate your thoughtfullness.

I ask for a to-go box. Show the server my food, put it in the to-go box and take it straight to the health department. I also make the server sign my box, sales ticket, etc. if I can.
