My favorites are:

1. A-10 Thunderbolt - Massive machine cannon with an airplane built around it, flies low and can be hit by missiles without crashing. Has a ton of cannon ammo.

2. Su-47 - Evasive maneuvers escapes missiles, weird wing design, and is in the experimental stage so it isn't used for war yet.

3. F-15 Eagle - This is a well-rounded jet and has many derivatives.

You're right, it would suck to try to go after a SR-71 only to have it zoom away.

F-16s are cheap but durable enough. They are like bees, mass-produced and you don't feel so bad if one were to go down.

F-22s are "pimped" but are somewhat lacking in raw performance.

F-14 Tomcat was neat but it had too many moving parts. Our air force is removing it from service :(

:) F35 is a good choice. It does a little of everything without replacing everything.

F-14D Super Tomcat

Hands down the best fighter aircraft ever designed. It moves like a fish and fights like a pugnacious pit bull on crack. Whereas earlier F-14s were slightly underpowered, the F-14D had two upgraded General Electric F110-GE-400 engines capable of providing almost 28,000 lbs. of thrust each.

These beauties were the reason I went into Navy Aviation, and I was crushed when they were replaced by the F-18s. True the F-18s are smaller and sexier, but the F-14D was a real warhorse that could hand out a pummeling the F-18s can't even dream of.

CH-53.

My husband has a keychain with the pic of one and up under it, it says CH-53. Every time we see a helicopter in the sky, no matter what it is, I always say CH-53. LOL. It's kinda' become a tradition. This is the hubby My bird is the biggest military helicopter in the US and the second largest military helo in the world. We are the only helo in the world who can lift another helo of its kind. We fly faster and farther than any helo except for the V-22 in plane mode. Without my bird nothing could get done in the military. We are able to carry 55 combat ready troops, 73,000 lbs externally 63,000 lbs internally. If you do the math this plane will not leave the ground but we break the laws of physics everyday. In 2015 the Marine Corps is coming out with the CH-53 kilo. A bigger badder and newer model. Were upgrading to 3 rolls royce engines capable of over 4500 ft lbs of torque. There aint nothing in the world like stickin your head out the window at 180 knots and feeling your lips wrap around your head. We are the legs of the Marine Corps!!! Make me mad and Ill lift your house! OORAH!

In terms of pure technology and design I would go with the F-22A. It isnt probably the best in everything but its better overall than anything else with all its capabilities (heavy hitting firepower, advanced radar, supercruise and stealth).

If I want sheer firepower...I'd go with the B-52H Stratofortress. Well yeah its kinda vulnerable now to modern SAM/AA weapons but most of the USA's enemies anyways dont have them. Plus the B-52 could easily level a whole area with its large arsenal of bombs and missiles (which is a lot more than the B-1B and even the B-2).

Regards the Su-47...the actual combat version that the Russkies and Indians are gonna get will be more stealthy in design (they may even use active plasma stealth technology) but will apparently not get the forward-swept wings...

DeHaviland Mosquito, the "Wooden Wonder". I did always loved the shape :)

Yes, it was a beutiful plane. Fast, agile, and multi-purpose - there were bombers, night fighters and recon Mosquitos. They were so fast that - early in the war - they were the only bombers that could operate without fighter escort, as they were fast enough to run away from German fighters...
Ah, the history.

Going to make you young guys go look for this one: Consolidated PBY Catalina... Can go buy one for $260,000.00... flys for app. 14 hours without refueling, lands on water or land, and is a lot cheaper to fly than the SR-71.

F-5.

Beautiful design, small, inexpensive, super-sonic.

I wouldn't want to go head to head with your choices unless I was living in Hollywood fantasy land (Top-Gun).
