I suffer from mild insomnia too. Used to I should say. I would only sleep at the wee hours of the morning. But since I've started working, I haven't got this problem anymore. I practically pass out in bed every night. So I probably you could try to make yourself as busy as possible then you'll be tired at night. Hope it works for you.
Another thing you should know too. There are three different types of insomnia. Maybe you ought to know the seriousness of your insomnia. Check this out. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insomnia
If it's too serious, you might wanna consult a Doc. He'll prescribe you some sleeping pills I suppose. But try not to rely too heavily on them ya? Good luck!

I work 12 hour days in a hospital and never have insomnia. I think the reason is that I work my *** off and never have time to sleep. The minute my head hits the pillow, I am out like a rock. When the alarm goes off at 5 am, I have to drag my rear out of bed. I am off tommorrow, so I am messing around with things I like such as this question thing.....in case your wondering.
Not being hateful or condiscending, but maybe you should get another job. Its a win win situtation. you make more money, and you sleep like a rock.

You need to make it a habit. Go to bed a the same time every night. Also, don't watch tv or play on the computer, because those things stimulate your brain. Get in bed with a good book, and after reading a couple of pages, you should be tired enough to fall asleep.

Eat dinner much earlier and dont watch t.v., do the computer or play video games right before bed. These all tend to stimulate the mind and it takes time for it to settle down once you've gone to bed.
Start up a good novel and try to read a chapter before bed.

Contact a doctor.
While you are waiting to meet with the doctor, eliminate stress, reduce clutter in your bedroom, as well as in your life. Make your bedroom and bed solely your sleeping place and not your desk or eating table. Cover up the clock so that you won't be preoccupied with your clock and the time, and watch something soothing prior to going to bed.
Take a warm bath, or shower, use some aromatherapy and lull yourself to sleep.
Good luck...

Start singing 99 Bottles of Beer On the Wall, and sing yourself down to one.
Try to keep your tongue in the middle of your mouth, not touching teeth or any part of your mouth.
Try to solve a crossword puzzle.
Try to memorize all the Z words in the dictionary.
I've heard that drinking warm milk helps..but I've never tried it.
Open window for a breeze...light some incense...(I live in a small house with 4 cats...I rely heavily on incense).
Uhhhhh think of your favorite songs in ABC order and sing them to yourself....i.e., All My Love, Bye-Bye, Miss American Pie, Come Sail Away...
Usually, what does it for me is anything that requires lots of brain cells on an already tired brain.

In college I lived off Nyquil, BUT thats not the answer. Try having some camomile tea before you try to lay down. Also, don't eat at least an hour before.

Well, it helps me if I can smell something good before I go to sleep, even if i just put a little lotion on my shoulder or somewhere where i'll smell it, no matter how crazy that sounds. It also helps to sleep with the radio on, sometimes! It also helps if you read something peaceful before you go to sleep, or if you just think of something really peaceful, even if it's something gay like peter pan. Lol... sometimes you can sing to yourself, too, if that helps. Hugging or surrounding yourself with pillows is also helpful!
