Well, that depends on what nation you're from. You neglected to tell us.
If you really want to serve your nation, I'd suggest doing voluntary work helping the homeless and underpriviliged or become a doctor, nurse, firefighter, social worker, charity worker of some kind or anything else that actively helps society.
I don't really think joining the military would be worthwhile. You wouldn't be serving a nation, you'd be serving a politician.

Join the military, volunteer at an elder care facility, become a Boy Scout leader, become a policeman or fireman, become a politician, help everyone without being asked.

Educate yourself, work hard, dont be a criminal, vote. Thats probably about it. I wouldnt join the military.. the current status of the world is pretty bad.

you can serve your nation...not only being a hero but if you were just following the laws of your nation...if you were doing anything w/o a person being hurt!!!
