Once upon a decade, I had that job. My employers brought in the phone company and they trained me on etiquette as well as the equipment. Hello, not Hi, but Good morning/afternoon, (if answering the phone, insert company name here) may I help you? is better. Never say hold-please, say; can you hold? and wait for an answer. If they say they can't hold then do your best to help them (take a message) or get them to hold for you because you are just to nice to refuse. Don't leave people on hold for more than a minute without coming back to the phone and asking if they can continue to hold. When the trainer said 1 min. I thought it was incredibly short, but 60 seconds is a long time when your holding, turned out I could handle 5-8 other calls in that time. In reality I left people on hold from 30 sec. to (worst case) 2 min. When they say they can't hold any longer, ask if you can take a message. Be upfront-and-honest & people won't feel jerked around, they will be friendly & compliant. If you work for a jerk, or the visitor/caller is a jerk, try to work out an acceptable response with your employer before the encounter. You have the power to make or break a person's day, power is fun when people think your an angel & treat you like one. Make them feel valuable, but exude the confidence that you are not the doormat, you're the friendly Guard. People stomp on cutsie and lash out at cute-turned-catty. Oh, and watch out for wolfs, just because they are an important client, doesn't mean you have to put up with sexual harassment. Be curtious, but let them know that you find that kind of thing not becomming of a man of their stature (they will get a laugh out of that) and talking to you like THAT hurts your feelings, to even think that-that-that he would think of you as that kind of a woman.... Look crushed, not tearful, that usually gets them. If that fails there is always www.eeoc.gov/types/sexual_harassment.html

You have to keep you cool, smiling, helpful and alert all the time, as you will be the person by whom visitor gets the first impression of the company.

It is very responsible job but keep yourself cool. Immidiately pass the information which you receive by telephone to the respective person. Dont leave the seat frequently.

always answer by saying hi, not hello. mumble and stammer a lot. say ummmmmm excessively, eat gooey food like poridge or bananas while talking on the phone. breathe heavily, chew gum, grind your teeth audibly, and never say bye when you hang up
