The horse injured the front left knee while in a fight with another horse,it was very very swollen for several days, now it just seems to be the tendons on the outside of the knee that are swollen.

Lots of time. I would NOT swim him for a while. Depending on where exactly it is if it strains nerves in there that is irreversible. Tendons by nature take a long time to heal...6-8 months not unusual. With the location of those tendons it might be longer, or not, depending on muscles around them. (if I'm reading the ? right).

update to added info:
I definitely would not swim him for a while - walking, lots of TLC. Pay attention to heat and tenderness and if it flares up take a step back.

I had a horse that in part severed honestly one of her extensor tendons (i do not keep in mind which one, it changed into 20 years in the past). The harm changed into actual interior the front of her decrease back leg, at the front of the hock joint. After recuperating, she changed into sound and rideable, yet she persevered to wish that leg for some thing else of her existence. the purely time you may want to tell changed into on the canter. on the lead the position that leg might want to be on the floor by using itself, she might want to take a short hopping step so her different decrease back leg might want to come down once attainable. even as she cantered on the different lead, the position the injured leg changed into on the floor at the same time because the alternative the front leg, she took a classic stride. So, oftentimes, she changed into sound for path using in any respect gaits, yet her leaping or exhibiting occupation changed into over. My horse's adventure might want to be very different than the pony you're gazing. if you're fairly fascinated, have a vet do an intensive soundness verify earlier procuring. in my view, i imagine i'd keep searching for a horse that would not have this sort of harm in its previous.

Well, it's not good! Rest, then when you start working him again - lots and lots of walking in the sea. I've had many injured horses come good again with water therapy - and by that I mean lots of walking in the sea ..not swimming!!
After 6 months walking, trotting etc...then start swimming!
