If you are from the US, this will likely occur, though people from Mexico are more resistant to it, since their immune system deals with it a lot. It is called "Montezuma's Revenge" as in the Aztec ruler exacting a revenge upon the white invaders. Call it whatever you want, but avoid it if you can!

It is true and this is why: In Mexico, there is different bacteria in their water, which we are not accustomed to. If you drink the water, your digestive system basically panics and does everything it can to get the foreign bacteria out. I worked at a Club Med as a nurse there and saw a lot of visitors vacations absolutely ruined because they accidently drank the water when they had ice in their drinks (ice, of course, is still water and it doesn't kill the bacteria) So if you're planning a trip to Mexico, be very careful not to get their water into you or your trip could be ruined. Instead, you can buy bottled water there, like Evian, or be like me and just drink canned Coke the entire time. It doesn't do much for your teeth, but it beats being sicker than sick. If push came to shove and you needed to drink Mexican water, you could safely add a few drops of bleach to the water to kill the icky bacteria or boil the water for ten minutes. Not too convenient to do that though. The military uses iodine tablets to decontaminate the water (although I understand it tastes terrible) to kill amoebas (amoeba, amoeba, amoeba! Arriba!) I hope this helps answer your question and may you never experience the awful effects of Mexican water!

Ok here's the scoop. Mexico for the most part is a third world country and as such, water purification techniques are not up to par with the rest of the industrialized countries. There are live viruses and parasites in the water that have not been killed in the meager purification techniques that are used there. Don't drink water in Mexico unless it comes from a sealed bottle that you open yourself.

That is correct. Although it's probably not true for everywhere in Mexico, the water quality as a whole is substandard to that of what other countries have. Mexicans don't mind it because their bodies are used to it.

You should never drink the tap water when traveling anywhere outside of your home town water supply.

You will get diarrhea because you body is expecting your home town water and you are giving it a slightly different concoction of elements to deal with. The stomach is very sensitive to these small changes and its first response to change is to eliminate it as quickly as possible and absorb as little as possible.

Most people that travel a lot know better.

In the past, visitors often returned home from Mexico with stomach illnesses, but this type of vacation souvenir is a rarity today. Massive investments in an improved infrastructure and a general increase in standards of cleanliness and hygiene have practically wiped out the problem. However, it's easy to play it safe and drink bottled water. And ice served in tourist establishments is purified.

it isn't any longer inevitably undesirable to drink tap water in Mexico. some places have positive water, yet different places which aren't from now on besides maintained like peoples water tanks and tap water in poor places have micro organism that maximum human beings' immune platforms are not tailored to combating off. seeing that human beings interior the U.S. drink specially bottled water, filtered water and mineral water, their immune platforms do not improve defenses antagonistic to the micro organism in water from Mexico and so that they get unwell in the adventure that they drink numerous it quickly. Boil it and also you'd be positive.

yes it is generally called Montezuma's revenge or trail sickness. it is cased by your immune system suddenly getting a rush of Bactria it does not know how to fight (because it has never seen that type before). it can also mess you up in other ways and can even kill some people. if you do decide to go to Mexico (unless you have already drank their water time and time again) i would suggest bringing bottled water or jugs of water. this is the safest rout.

Yes that is true. It is also true in some other countries in small children. We were stationed in Germany in 1960 and my little brother was 4 years old and got terrible diarrhea for the first 2 weeks although the rest of us were fine. The dr. said it was the water because of his age.
