I would go to the pound and get a mixed breed, they are the best in my opinion. Healthy and smart, if your lucky. I guess some are not but the one I have is and he is very intelligent and good natured and also a good watch dog. You can tell by the paws how big they will get, if the paws are fairly large they will not be a small dog, I hope you don't leave the dog outside all the time, if so , I feel this is not good way to treat a dog, they need lots of socialization and love. They hate being left alone thats why I have two and try not to leave them alone for any long length of time. If you live in a hot area I would consider a dog that can tolerate the heat and most dogs can't, so that is another thing to consider.

First answer - any kind of dog that you like. :) If you'd like another dog from a shelter, then go to the shelter, describe what kind of dog you like to the shelter personnel, and ask if they have any dogs like that up for adoption. Most people who work at animal shelters are more than willing to help you find a dog you like.

On the other hand - if you're looking to find a specific breed, and want to end up getting a purebred pup - the first thing I suggest is working out *exactly* what kind of dog you want. By "medium to large" do you mean 30 to 70 pounds, or 80 to 150 pounds? Do you like a thick coat, or prefer a low-maintenance slick coat? Do you want a dog that'll bark at intruders, or one that will be friendly to everyone (including the neigbor's kids)? Do you want a dog that likes to hang around and watch the world go by, or a dog that really needs a long walk every day?

Once you know what you want, I'd suggest going to www.dogbreedinfo.com and going through those breeds to find one that looks like what you're looking for. Then, do a little extra research; ask your vet, or a local dog trainer, if they think that breed would be a good match. Meet dogs from that breed, and call a couple breeders to ask about health issues and temperament. *Then* make the decision to get a pup. It takes a little longer to do the research, but if it gets you fifteen years with your dream dog, it's well worth it. :)

Good luck!

Really depends on more factors than you have given. For example, if you are not going to be working with the dog very much, you do not want to get a "working" dog (like a cattle dog). They will get bored and destructive.

So, how much time will you have to play or walk this new pet? Do you have children in the home or in the neighborhood? How large a food and heartworm medication, etc bill are you able to afford? If you rent, does the landlord have any restrictions? Some landlords will not allow certain breeds due to insurance reasons. Will the pet be outdoors only? What's the weather like where you live?

I would go for a medium sized dog if you plan on only giving it exercise in the back yard. I own two boxers and we have over and acre for them to run around and a lake for them to play in. Big dogs need a lot of room when outside. I would go and look at the AKC web page and look at the registered breeds. It will give you an idea of what size you think you might want. After you have picked a few dogs out do TONS of research on the breed. I'll list some good mid-sized breeds for you to check out: Bull Terrier, French Bulldog, Shetland Sheepdog-very smart dog, but barks a lot, Shiba Inu, Fox Terrier, Schnauzer, Welsh Terrier, Welsh Springer Spaniel, Schipperke, English Foxhound, Cocker Spaniel.

Get australian shepherds! They're my absolute favorite kind; herding dogs are the smartest of breeds. They're medium, above the knee (unless you're really tall) or below the waist. There is an Aussie Rescue organization too, and I have seen people with very beautiful dogs from there.

I will recommend a German Shepherd, I have a white one and they are the smartest and most loyal dog I ever owned in my life, they require a lot of exercise which is good for both the dog and the owner.

I really recommend a Doberman Pinscher. Most people believe they are viscous attack dogs but they are the most loyal, loving, intelligent companions. They will be by your side 100% and love to play with you. They do require alot of exercise but it is totally worth it! They bond really strongly with their owners and must live inside with you. They love anything as long as they can be there to spend time with you and protect you. The only thing is to socialize them when they are very young so that they are not weary of strangers.

Rottweiler
This is one of the best, most loyal and intelligent large breed dogs ever! Our Rott is great around the kids too, he's very protective of them and playful. I definitely recommend a Rottweiler.
