PERSONALLY, I HAPPEN TO LOVE THE VINTAGE STUFF MYSELF, I HAVE TONS OF IT. AND THE RED! AND IT CAN VERY WELL BE A BEDROOM COLOR! THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH YOUR COLORS UNLESS YOU HATE THEM. EVERYONE HAS THEIR IDEA OF WHAT IS A BEDROOM COLOR BUT REALLY IT'S WHAT YOU LIKE! I KNOW THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO THINK EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE THE SAME 'STIFF AS A BOARD UP YOUR A S S' TRADITIONAL CRAP BECAUSE IT WOULD BE A FRICKING CRIME TO BE DIFFERENT. GOD, I'M GONNA POP A VEIN! HA!
I'M FAR FROM BEING A YOUNG PERSON BUT I HAVE FUN TASTES I THINK AND I KNOW WHAT I LIKE. I DON'T KNOW HOW OLD YOU ARE OR WHAT KIND OF RELATIONSHIP YOU HAVE WITH YOUR MOM BUT IF YOU LOVE YOUR STUFF AND YOUR STYLE HAVE A TALK AND GET IT BACK. BE YOURSELF AND BE PROUD OF BEING DIFFERENT. WHY IN H*** WOULD YOU WANT TO HAVE THE SAME CRAP EVERYONE ELSE DOES? I LOVE MY CLUTTER, AND IT'S NOT CLUTTER TO ME, JUST TO EVERYONE ELSE!

Becky, dark colors are pretty but they make a room look smaller and can be depressing. Maybe Mom is trying to "perk up" your room (and your spirits) by making it a little brighter. My mom and I never agree on colors or much else anything else when it comes to decorating. The best advice I can give you is to sit down with Mom and try to reach a compromise. Half dark, half light or colors in a mid-value range, so to speak. It is your room, that's true, but it may be Mom's house, so you two need to work on meeting in the middle. Just a suggestion: why don't you do some decorating research on the net or in magazines and find a color scheme you like? People always understand your point of view better when they have something visual to "see." Also, searching for just the right colors can be fun. The library, Home Depot and Lowe's have lots of books with beautiful rooms for inspiration. Good luck!

It is important that the color in the different rooms around the house come together logically. Analyze each of the tones; determine which colors, and in what proportions, they complement each other to give the final result.
Here are ten household helpful hints for choosing room colors:
1 Brighten up the darker spaces by painting the walls in pale colors.
2 If you paint a high ceiling a dark color, will make it look lower.
3 A light blue or a gray make a small room seem wider.
4 Use the wall colors to mark off areas according to actives.
5 Red and reddish tones are bold, exciting colors which stimulate movement. They are especially suitable for work areas.
6 Yellows are warm, bright colors, ideal for dark spaces to make us feel cozy.
7 Green is essentially linked to life; it reminds us of nature and is perfect for interiors we want to connect with outside.
8 Blues are fresh, harmonious, and easy to combine. They remind us of vast extensions of sea and sky.
9 To make a room more radiant, you can paint the walls in light colors and introduce dashes of color through the furniture, complements, and ornaments.
10 Neutral colors like beiges and browns combine well with other tones and give the room a natural feel.
Color is clearly the most visible linking factor between separate rooms and is ideal for giving consistency to the decoration scheme of a whole house.

I think that you have to decorate your room to please yourself. Maybe your Mom was trying to give you some ideas to make a change to your decorating style. I do not know your age, but if you are at least a teenager, as long as you take care of your room, as far as keeping it clean and neat and putting your clothes away, you should have some input into how it is decorated. If your Mom or other family members are the ones that take care of it and it is too "cluttery," ie: difficult to clean, then maybe a brighter less crowded theme is in order. Good luck and enjoy your room!

In all honesty it is your space. Sure it might break some traditional rules but that is why it is so special. Tell your Mum that you know that your bedroom breaks some of the decorating "rules" but that is what you love about it and the effect is deliberate.
Dark colors can be very soothing. Green and red do however compliment each other.
My own living room is deep true blue and crimson with splashes of dark green and pale yellow. I love it and my friends always remember it.

i say you do both! do the walls and larger items in the pastel colors then do nice accencts pillows frams, chair even, fan, in the bold colors that you like! get red vases for flowers and put it on a light orange table! use the dark to accent it will open up the room more! it will still be the Dark you like but it will aslo have the brightness too!

Your bedroom should reflect you and your taste! Paint it what ever color you wish to wake up to and decorate it with the things that bring you happiness. You need only worry about pleasing yourself and anyone who doesn't like your decorating scheme, well they just don't need to go in there. Wish you luck, and by the way it sounds like a very elegant room!

I was told.. and led to believe that calming colors are better for bedrooms. Because.. well you want to be calm to sleep. Soothing cool or neutral colors. So maybe pick a color you like and find a cool shade or it rather than a warm one? Warm tones are better for kitchens and living rooms in my opinion..

red is not a good color for a bedroom. Maybe peach or light colrs that you like. I also would have a talk with your mother.

I think all that really matters is that YOU like it.
Bring your stuff back if that's what makes you enjoy your room.
