No, your Denon, and most amps, (AVR stands for Audio Video Receiver) have internal pre-amps built in. Simply hook up your Akai whatever to any analog input.

You don't need a preamp. The only things that may require a preamp are phonographs. THe AVR-1804 has a "phono" input, this has a built in preamp.
