This quote was on a painting with depicting a fireman rescuing a person.

I highly disagree with it. When I'm in my hour of need, I will not all of a sudden find God, will you?

indie - No Atheist will risk their life for another? My boyfriend's a fireman, he does that every day. Many firemen around here are Atheists, and I dare say, nurses, ambulance officers and other altruistic people are as well.

that's absolutely true

this is getting at a fundamental element of religious belief - that it requires a lack of mental strength to need a belief like god/religion as a crutch

those with mental strength do not require god, even when being cooked inside a burning building

thanks for spreading the word!!!

i've recently come to this understanding of religion and those who have faith in god and i only hope that we will all continue to strive for mental strength, thereby losing our fear of death and failure, gaining the personal strength and community strength to deal with it, and ridding the world of all the strife caused by religious fundamentalism!

as i asked here, surely there's already enough physical fundamentalism in the world?

I think the origonal phrase was, "There is no such thing as an atheist in a fox hole" but there was a quote by someone that was " 'There is no such thing as an athiest in a fox hole' is not an argument against athiests but an argument against fox holes." Eitehr way does it really matter? all people do is bicker about religion and its really quite stupid. Just accept what other people believe don't go around sturring up controversy thats why we have the giant middle east powder keg, cause no one knows how to be tolerant of each others religion. If you disagree get over it.

I almost died 3 years ago and trust me, at NO time did I EVER consider talking to an imaginary sky-pixie.
What I did do was take the time to ensure that my will was in order, and write a good-bye letter to my wife and children.
I read it to them when I left the hospital. And there was NO mention of god, or any other pixie, leprechaun or fairie in the letter either.
So that saying, (like the saying "there are no atheists in foxholes) is a way for christians to make themselves feel better. Nothing more.

From the stand point of someone who did EMS... Not many I met in EMS were athiests... The ones I've met who were athiests would not risk their lives for someone else...like by running into a burning building to save someone, or jumping into dangerous situations to help another. Athiesm seems to be for the self and not for anyone else.

Almost all the EMS people I knew and worked with believed in some kind of higher power...God, Christ, etc. As a prison guard, we were told to pray before going in, because we didn't know if we were coming out. In nursing, many of us prayed for our patients. You don't see that in athiests...caring enough to risk your life for another.

THAT is what they mean by "There are no Athiests in burning buildings". No athiest will risk their life for another.

I'm nonetheless attempting to determine what the "homosexual schedule" is. Obviously the one ones with an schedule are the folks who're seeking to make it appear like we now have a few tremendous schedule whilst we do not. Except perhaps tolerance.

The quote is obviously not true. My great-grandfather was in his deathbed when his family brought a priest to make him "accept God" and "repent his sins" before he died.
He died kicking the priest out of the house and yelling that he was an atheist. You need a lot of courage and idealism to be able to do that!

Next time someone insults your beliefs, tell them the following phrase... "The only church that enlightens is the burning church".
It will be fun to watch their faces turn red with anger, believe me! =)

Silly quote. I for one could never, ever be convinced even in the face of death that a god actually exists. I'm as convinced in the truth as many religious people are brainwashed.

I'm gonna agree with this half heartedly...if you're flammable, you're gonna get out of the burning building.

Seriously, a fear of a traumatic death, has led many people to change their beliefs, its basic human instinct to want something better than what you have. That doesn't mean everyone, mind you.
Personally, I think I'm gonna try to find a way to save myself.

It is a completely false quote. If I was in a burning building I would not suddenly believe in god.
