because they do shift work for one, usually 12-14 hours. Another is the stress. I'm assuming you mean ER nurses or acute care rather than family practitioner nurses who work in offices. I'm sure those are both contributing factors...

The long shifts 12 to 14 or more hours. Their families that they hardly see but they love their job. A good nurse is a responisible person. When a crisis hits a patient that they are taking care of diesit puts an effect on seeing the familys loss and the patient. Nurses in california were getting under paid for the longest time.Thats why there are so many traveling nurses to make their perdium pay and get better wages. Some nurses get treated by some drs like crap and some don`t. Its a toss over and very demanding now especially with all the drs orders and more computer work so you see less of the patient unless you work in ER then you see alot of tragedy but to be a nurse you have to be on stat all the time and what ever happens happens, I was told when I was in training if youre in it for the money get out right now. They said compassion makes a good nurse and having consideration for all your patients and their families....

Because it's not a "9 to 5" type job. You don't leave until your charting is done and if there are any emergencies that might come up. Dealing with difficult pts, doctors, dealing with traumas can be very very stressful.

Besides the hours that they work, the job is emotionally draining. Sometimes you have to watch people die . . .its a really hard job. I really respect Nurses, Doctors, anyone in the health field.

it is high, but still not as high as police officers. It is probably because they are caught in the middle of taking care of patients, dealing with their family and taking orders from doctors who are not always easy or pleasant to deal with. Then there is the human factor of doing your best and having a patient die any way......it takes a toll on you emotionally
