I am a 21 year old female and I work for a sheriff's office in the state of Wisconsin. You do not need any experience to become a jail officer at the sheriff's office I work at, it may differ by agencies though. Your employer will send you to jail school but I sent myself to jail school. I was the first ever to do this without being employed. Within 2 months, I was hired and have been working for almost 8 months now. The pay is great and it's wonderful to be in a career that I love. I would suggest that. Good luck!!

Have you checked with the university's police department? I worked as a dispatcher on a work study grant. Besides dispatching, we also helped out at football games and such.
It was a great experience and came in handy when it came time to apply for my first law enforcement job.
Absent that, if you have to be 21 in Ohio then there is not much else you could do unless they have an explorer group which would also get you access.
I would be patient, believe me the time flies by and you want to concentrate on your education. If I had to do it over again, I would have gone beyond my bachelors and tried for any and all federal positions. There are so many more advantages then working with a local department and you could certainly put your time in with the Feds and then return to the local scene when you retire.
20 year retired law enforcement. Now a real estate agent. If you want a great part time endeavor my company has a lot to offer and is open to everyone. Email if you are interested.

I will be graduating in December with my bachelors in Criminal Justice. I work for my campus police department right now, then hopefully moving on to a local police department full-time.
Since your state's legal age is required to be 21, then you obviously cannot be a sworn police officer. However, there are other opportunities to get some experience in law before you are done with school. Check on any auxillary positions that might be available OR during your school year, try getting an internship with a law enforcement agency or government position that does not generally do front-line law enforcement.
Also, try to concentrate on your studies and get good grades. Worry about where you will work later down the road or atleast closer to graduation. Good luck in school. Let me know if you need any help in your CJ classes!

Start first by volunteering at the hospital. Start talking to med professionals, ask them questions on how they got in, etc. You may be working a job non-med related but eventually, you will work your way up. Try any temporary retail jobs. Start applying online, since many of the applications are now only available online, and follow up by calling the store every so often to check if they received the application and ask them when they start hiring. Use the internet to your benefit. The time you use facebooking (if you do) is the time you can use to apply for multiple jobs. Some jobs even take a month or so before they even give you an interview. Many hire for the summer. GET THOSE APPS in NOW.

A good way to get your foot in the door is to start as clerical in dispatch in a police department. Will also give you an idea of what the paper work and legal jargon are like. Pretty much any job AT or with a city or county will get you acquainted with their practices. (Good and bad.) Try parks and rec, city hall, code enforcement, animal control, etc... You can also volunteer as a cadet or reserve officer (without pay) before you finish your academy. From there you may hear about openings within the department and they may be more likely to hire you once they know who you are.

You can be in security. You could work for a home security company like ADT or for a shopping mall like City Center in Columbus (I don't know what part of Ohio you like in, so of course a mall in your area). You could be undercover security in a department store. If you like music you could be event security at concerts. You don't need to work in restaurants. You have chosen a noble profession, I wish you well.
