Upon converting due to personal conviction in the Islam religion, after marriage to a muslim, converts are looked down upon and back biting take place by family and societies in some countries.
Muslims believe all humans are born muslims, but some follow other pagan religions.
So why are converts regarded low and rejected and degraded in some societies?

what I meant was...that the woman is looked down upon by the extended family members. (Not so in countries like the UK, but it is so in countries like Sri Lanka). Pls note I am not a convert...asking due to interest and wanting to learn WHY?

Muslims are looked down upon because of all the terrorism and fighting in the Middle East. Terrorists are almost ALWAYS of the Muslim religion. However, not all Muslims are terrorists, or violent people. The terrorists are a type of Islamic Extremists, meaning they take some parts of the Islamic faith waaaaay too literally, and interpret it to mean that they must wipe out all Christians.
Don't take the snide remarks and put downs personally. Just remember that most people are ignorant when it comes to the actual religion of Islam, and just focus on your personal relationship with God. In the end, that's all that matters anyway.
(I am Christian by the way. Not Muslim, but I can understand what you're going through, and I understand that the religion of Islam is NOT an inherently violent one.)

I think there is some sort of negative connotation with Islam in other parts of the world. It's not necessarly the whole 'terrorist' stereotype so much as the thoughts attached to the word "muslim." There was actually a study done once where someone names a random word, and the participant says what first comes to mind. One of the words was Islam, and the top three things people said are extremeist, crazy, and Mecca. So I blame an untrue connotation attached to the word 'muslim'.
Sort of like if I say "rat", everyone thinks of a slimy person or a filthy animal. When in fact, rats are probably one of the cleanest animals out there. Islam is thought to be a very extreme, unyeilding, warlike religion in some parts of the world. Which it isn't... but that's what people believe.

I'm so pleased about your converison to Islam. I converted to Islam 20 years ago. I've lived in North Africa for the past few months and prior to that had lived in the Uk all my life. Its strange, but since converting, I have never fitted in with English people because I am a Muslim and I don't fit in, here in North Africa because I am English and they seem to be sceptical.
Don't worry about others my friend. You have done the right thing and I wish you sucess in this life and the next

I was married to a Muslim who converted to Christianity several years before I met her . Some of her own family threatened to kill her for doing so . So she only let her parents know where she lived. I looked down on her because she used Christianity to the extreme as long as it worked in her favor . She was totally nuts . Marriage lasted less than a year .

Young lady you have two strikes against you, first you are a infidel convert and even worse you are a woman. The Muslim world is a world where men dominate and women are at best tolerated. In the muslim pecking order you are just above slaves and and the lowest order of humans slime, infidels. They say a muslim man gets 74 virgins when he gets to heaven, to complete a woman's punishment I expect she gets 74 monther-in-laws.

People fear what they do not understand and where religion is concerned... history tells the long tale - men have died for centuries due to the fear of the unknown... Whether you believe in God or Allah you are trying to follow a path which we hope teaches good but not all people, no matter their land, do. They fear what they do not know.
Stay strong in your faith and know that your judge is not here on earth but beyond. Improve the person you are and keep your eyes (and heart) focused on the betterment of your soul.
God Bless and good luck

Hello,
That's how human beings are like. When you think that people love you, you will see them loving you. When you think that you are shy, people will think you are shy.. The way you think is the way people look at you..
I am so sure that the people around you are happy for your choice. You chose to be a part of their group and I am sure they are happy with that...
I think you only need time to adjust with them.. your religion is something between you and God. What you really need is trying to adjust to the new culture you are facing rather than the religion( you and the people around you are from different cultures, right?).
Goodluck

Unless the real platform is reached, there will always be sectarian abuse, violence and hatred. Tolerance, understanding and compassion will be exhibited by an individual who is on the spiritual platform, not the mental or intellectual platform, you can know a tree by its fruits.

uh... :(
Maybe the ones that do that are radical-extremists?
What do you mean by "some societies"? Which societies are you talking about? Like other Muslim ones? Or American ones?
