Walking is the standard, but it doesn't always work... First, consider why you want to start labor? Is the person overdue? The best answer is to consult your doctor and/or let nature take it's course. The last few weeks seem to last forever, but they won't. RELAX is the next best advice. That aside, this is what worked for me...

I drank raspberry leaf tea and had a massage therapist and my husband work on the pressure points in my ankles. It worked great and I didn't use any painkilling drugs at the hospital. You have to be very careful or you will impede the process not help it. Also, careful with the pressure points, they can get sore. Check around and see if there are any massage therapists who specialize in pregnant women. Mine was affiliated with a martial arts dojo (seifu kujitsu?? maybe??) and specialized in Japanese Restorative Massage... It was awesome & the birthing process was much more pleasant than the 1st time around without it.

Good luck and remember not to rush things. Relax and rest while you can! :-)

oh geeze the age old queston.. lol

sex.. prostoglndins soften the cervix

Evening Primrose oil - also softens the cervix

Red raspberry leaf tea - also softens the cervix and also tones the uterus

Black or Blue Cohosh - is a natural equivilant to pitocin - induces contractions I wouldnt' reccomend taking this though without asking your dr, or being close to the hospital

walking - increases pressure on your cervix helping it dialate and efface more

Oregano - don't know amounts, but it has some effect that causes contractions, maybe try oregano extract oil

there are some more too but I dont' remember any more :)

Sex, the sperm may help soften the cervix. Also massaging the cervix with your fingers or let your husband do it. It worked for me. I went from 1 centimeter to 4 in an hour. If you do this be gentle though and expect some bleeding from the cervix opening.
