Being charged for adding memory is the biggest rip off.

best buy and other places will charge you $70 for a job that should be free.

All you do is open your computer case and stick the memory stick into a slot and you're done. Definately not worth paying for. You could ask a friend to do it for you if you know anyone. It's really the most simple upgrade on a computer you can do.

You can also try and do it yourself by following these instructions.

Very very easy to add memory. You really don't need to be technical. If you bought your computer new, you will have a motherboard sheet that tells you what kind of memory your computer takes and where the slots are. All you do is stick the card in the slot - it's that easy. The computer will do the rest. The important thing is to know WHAT KIND of memory your computer takes. You may be able to research it on line if you don't have your motherboard sheet.... maybe you have a friend that knows a little more than you do - you don't have to be a tech or expert to do this.

Neither, you can change the memory yourself. It is not that hard. If I (I am 55) can teacher my 9 year younger sister to build her own computer, it can not be that difficult for you to add memory.

Get your owners manual out it will tell you the type and configuration of memory. Buy that memory and install it. If you can not find your owners manual then go on line, on the Internet and find your make and model. Go to the site of your computer do a site search and find the manual (which is usually in PDF format) download the manual, print it up. Or if you know the make and model number go to both of these sites and by entering in the proper make and model, these sites will tell you the memory numbers you will need for your computer.

Typically companies like compusa and mom and pop shops will install the memory for free when you buy it from them, at least take to someone you can sue if they screw up your PC.

To get an idea of how much it's going to cost go to www.kingston.com then choose the make and model. click on the largest type of memory to get the worst case scenario for pricing. I hope that helps.

One thing I would add to the above answers. When you go to install the new memory wear either clean rubber gloves, or an anti static wrist strap. This is to protect your PC from static.

i'd go to crucial.com and buy it there. you tell them what pc you have via drop down menus or let them run a system scan, they then steer you to the right type of memory for your pc. they are competive in price, and send you instructions on how to install. a great way for a newb to be sure they bought the right memory. good luck.
