It means that what the person is talking about happened a long time ago, that a lot has happened since then. Like standing on a bridge over a fast moving river. A box floating in the water passes under the bridge and floats on down the river. A few minutes later, when the box is out of site, someone on the bridge starts talking about the box, its colour, its size, how long it took to pass under the bridge like it's just happening. You'd probably be more inclined to say "Geez, that was ages ago", but you could say "a lot of water has passed under the bridge since then". Same as the person talking about some event that happened a long time ago.
