This Chinese-American, native New Yorker will share a secret with you. You can pay as little as $1 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Fifth Avenue/82nd Street). The magnificent, world-famous museum was built on public land. This is the reason for the “Suggested” Admission Fee. You will enjoy the Temple of Dendur (Eyptian wing), the Scholar Garden (Chinese wing), the Noguchi “endless” water fountain (Japanese wing) and the sculpture/statue garden (American wing). The cafeterias all serve really good food too. (All revamped during past few years.) Spend wisely…$1 admission + $12 food/water…and you might even keep some change in your pocket. http://www.metmuseum.org/

Wear comfy shoes and take a camera, preferrably a disposable digital in case it gets lost or stolen, and go to Central Park, Times Square, or someplace where there is a lot to see and do in a particular area. Go into the shops or ask the vendors for suggestions from the locals if you can't find enough to do on your own. I did that last spring in Chicago and had the best time. Walk as much as you can and take the least expensive means of transport and keep an open mind and you will be amazed at the fun that can be had for little or no money.

NYC is one of the best cities to visit. I'm from Los Angeles, and I don't really think that the city is as expensive as everyone makes out. But if you do want free, I agree with those that said to just walk the city.
You'd be surprised at how gorgeous Manhattan is! Check out Macy's on 34th Street--you dont have to buy anything, the wooden escalator is a neat thing to see.
Head downtown to the WTC site, it is touching and makes you really feel the impact of the tragedy.
But by far, the best free thing to do in NYC is Central Park. You cannot BELIEVE how immense it is! It is truely one of the most beautiful places on earth! You go from crazy frantic city life to quiet peaceful nature. Have fun! Wish I was going!

Whatever you want, it's so much fun. You could take the Ferry, very inexpensive, but awesome for sightseeing especially at this time of year with good weather, or just check out Times Square area, go to Rockefeller, lots of things to do. NYC is beautiful, take a tour of Central Park. Awesome city, I love NY

If you are looking for Free, Washington DC would be a better place to go. Their are not many free activities in NYC, just getting from point A to B will cost you an arm and a leg. You can try Central Park

we paid 40 dollars per person for a double decker tour bus ride around the entire Manhattan city. It was fun. I thought it was expensive at first but the bus took you to every popular place on the island. We only had one day there so the tour let us see everything we needed to see. It was worth it!
