husband (who is an IT professional) disagrees. She has learned how to do code and html and even some animation this summer. However, there are other things in life. I know that there have been studies done on children sitting in front of a screen, even though she is making web-pages and it is interactive, I just can't agree with him on this one...

Just a footnote - we are normally quite active with swimming, etc., but today it was 108 degrees plus here in the San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles!! That is why we were inside. The beaches are way to crowded right now!!

5 hours is ENTIRELY too long for a child to be sitting in front of a screen (TV, Computer or Video Games)!!! You are right with this one...I would suggest no more than 1 hour a day on the computer and 1 hour of TV or Movie time! She needs to experience outside play, imaginative play and group play...sitting in front of the computer for 5 hours is neglecting her of the other types of play that she needs to interact in! Stick to your guns on this one.....!!

Well i would say thats too long. When I was younger I did the same thing. Ive been a computer geek since I was about 7 and its not a good thing to be on a computer for long periods of time...

im almost 14 and i have already had signs of carpal tunnel syndrome from my hand being in a bad position with the mouse.

I know how addictive it can get making webpages etc. (believe me, i do it every day lol)

just introduce her to some other things while shes young and dont let her continue to do that till shes older.
She could end up with problems like me.

Kids need some outside excersize time...get away from the tv, video games and computer...at least an hour a day. But to have a child sit in front of a computer for that long is not a good idea.

That is way too long! She'll grow up with carpal tunnel and back problems. Sitting in front of the computer is as bad if not worse than the tv. She needs to play, swim and be active. She sits in school the rest of the year. The summer is for outdoor play.

I think this is great. I think you should be thrilled that she is obviously astute at mastering technology - in her lifetime it will be infinitely more mportant than today. She is getting a headstart. She is learning advanced skills and would not have sat at the computer for so long unless she was enjoying it immensely. If she was at the piano for so long and played like Beethoven would you be happy and sign her up for America's got talent? She sounds like a prodigy who may have this summer discovered a true gift. Let her explore her interests. Next summer it could be aviation or rocketry or robots or cooking or sewing or even the piano. Summer is the time for focused fun learning and exploration.

properly i'd say thats too lengthy. even as i changed into youthful I did a similar aspect. Ive been a pc geek seeing that i changed into about 7 and its no longer a sturdy aspect to be on a pc for lengthy classes of time... im almost 14 and that i have already had signs and indicators of carpal tunnel syndrome from my hand being in a foul position with the mouse. i comprehend how addictive it may get making webpages etc. (believe me, i do it each day lol) only introduce her to three different issues even as shes youthful and dont enable her proceed to attempt this until eventually eventually shes older. She might want to finally end up with issues like me.

Your husband is dead wrong. Just because he is a "hot shot" IT professional doesn't mean sitting in front of a computer is good for a child. Your husband needs to have his head examined. Take control. Don't disagree with him, set rules and follow through. Tell him to butt out or get out.

I think it is wonderrful that your daughter is learning new things on the computer. That might be her career....who knows?

But seriously...everything in moderation. and Yes, 5 hours is way too long to be doing anything sitting in a certain spot, typing and viewing a computer screen.

Tell your hubby that you just simply don't want her on there for that long of a period of time. Hopefully he will respect your wishes.

good luck

Even if you can't get outside 5 hours without a break is ridiculous. One hour on one hour off(with no screen of any sort involved)
