Any trade that requires a college degree, yes they will start at a higher rank, because of the degree. If you have a Bachelor's degree or higher, you can enter the military as an officer (lieutenant) rather than an enlisted member. You would attend OCS (Officer Cadndidacy School) and be granted a commission upon graduation. If you elect to become enlisted anyway, instead of an officer, you will start at a higher rank (usually E-4, rather than E-1), but you will still be at the low end of the spectrum.

Past experience in a trade will most likely give someone an advantage over the average joe. When people go into basic training, they all start off on the same level(whether they did ROTC, were a doctor, lawyer, etc). One's ability to absorb military knowledge, etc is what will give someone their "rank."

They would be officers but it used to be that Doctors and Lawyers like in the Air Force were the ones who couldn't make it or did something wrong in the civilian world. Or they just wanted to make a difference or wanted student loans repaid!

Well, you could theoretically enter as an officer because you have a college background instead of as an enlisted person.
