well, seriously though, if your pics are worth saving. Don't do anything else- it's just going to rewrite over your data!!! Stop following other peoples suggestions, stop surfing the net! Unplug your drive and call a recovery specialist. You can mail off your drive and for a couple hundred bucks they can get almost everything back... that's if it's actually worth that much to you.
If not, you can keep trying to get the "right" software. Good luck! Happened to me once in college- and because I had a lot of important files I coughed up the dough because I needed it done right and in a hurry.
