You don't say your babies age, but young babies sleep about 20 hours a day. Even older children need 8 to 12 hours of sleep a night plus morning and after noon naps.
So a schedule is important. Get up in the am be fed, bathed,
nap of 2 or 3 hours, lunch, afternoon nap, dinner ready for bed
and bedtime. This schedule will gradually have more waking time
as he or she gets a little older. But enjoy all this sleep time while
you can. Good Luck.

Put him/her to sleep sounds like a reasonable answer to me.
