My cousin Abbie who is five, has speech problems. It's not the normal lisp or slight accent. She simply cannot form the letters in her mouth. She can't say the first consanent of hardly any word! She can say "oke" for coke and "ick" for milk. Also she can say Mom and Dad and boat. Is there anything that can help her? I am on a mission to find out so any sites just link them to a reply.

Bless your heart for wanting to help Abbey. My little sister (she's 29 and extremely articulate and beautiful now) simply was not understandable when she was little. I could translate but everybody else was just kinda like, "yeah, okay kid. okay." She started kindergarten and then first grade and the school system where we grew up had a speech therapist who would come and work with the kids one day per week. That helped so much! So, maybe the schools in your area have this...or I hope a speech therapist will respond. Call the free clinics...cities all across America and counties have excellent free programs in the areas of speech, hearing, sight, et cetera. Best wishes!

My son had the same problems. With him it had a lot to do with ear infections. They are not hearing the words the way they should. He didn't say more then a couple of words till he was past 2. Are ear infections a problem? After a year of speech therapy he was fine. His younger brother which is 18 months younger also had to take speech because he picked up his speech patterns from his brother. Your local Social Services Office should be able to help you find a Speech Therapist in your area so you don't have to wait till she starts to school.

I would suggest starting with where she will be attending school and explain the speech problem. Ask if a speech therapist is available at the school, they can be helpful. My daughter at 4 had the same problem and I was able to get help from her preschool she attended. It turned out that she had to start seeing a speech therapist. She is 11 now and still in speech class. Talk to a speech therapist. Good luck!

School systems employ speech therapists. The child's mother should arrange with the school to have Abbie spend several sessions a week with the therapist. We took advantage of this with my youngest daughter and it was a wonderful experience for her because she had one-on-one support with a specialist and no other kids around to make fun of her while she was learning how to form the words correctly. You're a good cousin to be so concerned.

My 4 yr old has a speech problem and we contacted the elementary school and she goes to speech therapy 2 times a week (during the school yr) and it was free and it really has helped a great deal. I was amazed at the difference in just a few months.

You said she's 5. Is she in KG yet?
Once she is in school, get her an IEP and a speech therapist at school will work with her for FREE on a regular basis to correct her problems. My son started seeing the school speech therapist last year (1st grade) and will continue now in his 2nd grade year.

Well my son who is five, has been in speech therapy since he was three. The best thing to do is contact the Parents as Teacher org. in your school district and they will have her tested. Or if she will be starting kindergarden then she will be tested by the special school district and get special help. I would do this right away, because you dont want your little sis to fall behind.

I am a speech therapist and my first concern would be to have her evaluated by a licensed speech therapist in your area. You cannot really try anything from websites until you know what your cousin has (i.e., apraxia, phonological processing disorder, speech delay, etc.).

Try this web site:

It is great that you are trying to help your cousin-I commend you and good luck!

speach therapy. Some of the letters come at an older age for example the letter R is not always there till 7 years of age. She is old enough for speach therapy and the sooner the better
