Depends on which heaven you are talking about. There is quite a bit of evidence for the idea that God provides a separate idea of heaven for each of the different belief systems. This means that some of us are going to be partying with Jesus and the unconditionally loving God that he taught us about in the parable of the prodigal son.
I hear this one doesn’t have any gates. Come to think about it, I Guess it wouldn’t need any would it.
Meanwhile certain others will be busy worshiping A judgmental punishing version of the real God that we are with. I think that this might be the one with the fancy gates
You don’t suppose it could possibly be that they are intended to keep someone in do you?
Could it be God is trying to protect those of us who don't believe in a judgmental punishing God from something?
Sorry Jesus, yes I know, that’s why I’m still here. Ya, Ya I remember, loose the Judgment. Ok where was I.
Love and blessings

Rev 21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth are passed away; and the sea is no more.
Rev 21:2 And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband.
Rev 21:21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; each one of the several gates was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass
The New Jerusalem has gates so we can go in and out to the rest of the New Earth.

I'm not certain about this one. Most biblical mention of the so called "pearly gates" are in scriptures of prophecy which is often figurative in the bible.
The only thing I'm really sure about heaven is that it will be complete immersion in the presence of God and the final completion of our body mind and souls.
As far as keeping out, Gates are not needed to keep people out of heaven, Sin keeps people out of heaven. Sin and God are like two positive ends of the strongest magnets imaginable they cannot be together. Therefore those who are not fortunate enough to have their sins removed Will not be able to go anywhere near heaven. Gates or no gates.

Speaking of the New Jerusalem, which is the heavenly city: "It had a great and high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels; and names were written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel." (Revelation 21:12) & " Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter by the gates into the city." (Revelation 22:14) Who are these gates keeping out?--"Outside are the dogs [despicable persons] and the sorcerers and the immoral persons and the murderers and the idolators, and everyone who loves and practices lying." (Revelation 22:15)

Revelation 21:21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls: every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.
22 And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.
23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
24 And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.
25 And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.
26 And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it.
27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.
Does this get it for you?

I don't conceive pearly gates. They are already there.
It is written pearly gates. People who have died & went to heaven & returned back (prayed back) have seen them.
Those who hate God especially spiritual wickednesses. Sin does not go to heaven. Once one has been saved by grace, sin is washed away. We build on our house perishable or non-perishable. What one builds with is tested with fire. The perishable gets fried & doesn't go to heaven's gates. The everlasting goes through heaven's gates & gets rewards.

Yes. They are meant to keep out anyone who doesn't belong.
Namely humans. I believe that if there's a Heaven, you get to look in but nobody is allowed inside.

No gates - how heavenly would that be to exclude souls? If there is an all powerful god, then he should be able to make sure that all souls belong in heaven.

No. I think of the entrance to Heaven in terms of thighs. But I'll probably go to Hell for that. Oh well.
