Some do. I used to debate this issue with them but I stopped doing it. The way I look at it now is: "If believing this brings them comfort, they're not hurting anyone so who am I to take it away from them".

Actually the earth has been here for alot more than 6000 years, men were put here about 6000 years ago, before men God put dinosaurs here then satan messed that up and God did away with them, but it all works out in the plan of God for man kind.

Some people definitely believe in a young earth theory. In fact there are several people who work exclusively in this field. It is an interesting concept, and worth reading about if you are interested. While I am not convinced that there is a theological reason to insist on young earth, I also would caution anyone to maintain a healthy skepticism about the status quo scientific beliefs. Remember, anything that cannot be proved in a lab is philosophy, not science.

The modern day time scale wasn't even invented during the early days of the Old testament. A single day is what we call a passing of a day. Theoredically, 6 days could have been billions of years. This is how many people believe in creationism and evolutionism at the same time.
