I have to nanny this upcoming week for two little girls (ages 2 and 5) from 9-5 Monday through Friday. I've worked in a daycare for almost two years, and have been babysitting for six, but I've never had to entertain two children with such a handicap of an age difference for such a long period of time, and I'm afraid I'll run out of activities for them to do. Suggestions?

be active. both ages like to play outside. Play ball, play hide and seek. Perhaps give the 5 year old a toy that will keep him/her busy while you give extra attention to the 2 year old.

both age groups like crayons and paper. Have them create some art for your fridge or for mommy and daddy back home.

Bring some sheets and blankets to the living room and make a fort for the two of them to crawl around in. bring in extra chairs and things to drape the sheets over so it is bigger and more exciting.

do you have a shallow kiddie pool? Let them wade around in that for a little while. When that becomes boring have them run around the yard to get dry...make it a fun game.

Story time is good. Find books to read to them or take them to the library and let them pick one out to read or look at the pictures. Or maybe a trip to the ice cream shop.

Put in a music CD and have them play dancing games....like : when the music stops everyone has to freeze and see how silly the position they stopped in looks!!

when all else fails.....public televison has educational shows for all ages.

My sons are 2 & 5. They like to play outside doing pretty much anything! Here are a few suggestions: swings, slide, bubbles, sidewalk chalk. Since they are the same sex, they might enjoy similar things inside. For example, my boys enjoy coloring, painting, fingerpainting, Hot Wheels. They don't play the same with these things but there is some common ground. You may have to "help" the 2 yo with some of the activities. This age gap isn't so much of a handicap. They probably will just enjoy playing with the nanny!

It seems like "TV" is always suggested. Do some art activities such as finger paint, or marble paint (put a sheet of paper in a box, dip a marble in paint and then put it in the box and have them hold the box and make the marble move on the paper. Also, an obstacle course and easy food preparations.

Wow, can you babysit my kids! A schedule?!
Finding colors around the house. Kitchen fun time, nature walk take a bag to collect things, feed the animals like birds or squirrels, listening to music (dancing), ball toss, coloring ( tape a large piece of paper onto the table) Water play- bring a tote box with you or ask if she has a water table. Put in water and items that float. A bowl and cup and that will keep them busy for about an hour. Build a castle with chairs and a sheet. Can you find??? and name objects... Good luck

I used to babysit a 2 year old and a 5 year old over the summer...i learned a lot from that baby-sitting experience with them...it does get hard because of the age gap, but its easy in a way that they can both walk, talk, and be entertained by you and their games...here are some activities I used to do with them:

--ADVENTURE GAMES
*Camping
you use an old bedsheet to put over your heads and you pretend that's your tent....also, do thinks like pretend there's a campfire with marshmallows and sing campfire songs and tell campfire stories....you can also create other adventures like monsters are coming or something like that...

*Swimming
you can use the female (4 year old) and tell her to pretend she's swimming.....(if allowed) ask her to pretend to swim on her bed while you take the bedsheet and flap it so it looks like waves....you can use the 2 year old as a shark so they can have fun together...

*Treasure-hunting
buy both of them a little toy and hide it....or get a little sack and fill it with coins and hide it....then make a map so they can find the treasure....build little obstacles around the way to make it fun....

--Read them books

--play the usual games

*hide and seek
*tag
*hand games
*color together
*origami
*make something
*etc...

*just be creative in making the games up. I used to be worried if I could entertain them, but after a little while, I invented new games and remembered games I used to play as a little girl and I tried it with them.

hope this helps

Don't forget the public library! You can take them or go ahead of time and stock up on books, DVD's and activity books for you which will be loaded with ideas for things to do with them.

Have fun!

coloring is always good Play dough is one of my daughter's favorite things! Read to them. Get repetative books and give them each a line to say (In This n That, one of the lines repeats constantly "This and that, purred the cat.) Read the book out loud, and when you get to the line, point to one of them and have them say it in a silly voice. Find a kid's cookbook and take them into the kitchen to make "treats" for Mom & Dad.
