The person who said kittens are not good with children is making a false generalization. Kittens who have basic training and are comfortable with those in the household will not scratch. Go to the following link (take out the spaces!) for information on what breeds are friendly (good with kids). Those breeds that are good with kids are usually friendly.

I don't think it's really a breed thing. Some cats are sociable with everybody, most cats aren't.

Go to the pound and find a nice kitten. I don't think being sociable is a breed thing, it's a personality.

Manx are very easy going and affectionate to everyone. I got a manx from the pound and I just love her to death. She hates children...but I think that's just her...I don't think she's ever been around them too much or maybe had a bad experience...usually manx are very good with children.

I also got a Norwegian forest from the pound...she is the most affectionate cat I have ever seen, but she is also very skiddish and slow to warm up to new people and she is very attached to me.

Honestly though...just your 'mutt' from the pound or new kittens from the neighborhood or on a nearby farm are going to be very friendly. Cats will be loving if they are loved and treated gently, given lovins, attention, affection, playtime.

Don't get a kitten. Kittens are not good with children at all and they tend to bite more. I have a bombay, he is middle aged. I read the description in my cat book too. I have five cats, and he is the most gentle. They are good with children and they don't meow much. Bombays are the all black cats. There is no bad luck that comes with them! He (my cat) is the most gentle cat I have ever met. They are very sensitive to your emotions too. They purr almost constantly. :-)

Any domestic cat will be fine. It will be apparent when they are first introduced to you. If a cat is shy and cannot warm up quickly, I'd keep looking for another one. When we got our kitten he jumped on my husband and immediately rolled around on him and purred. Even though he wasn't the cutest at the time, we chose him bc he loved us immediately. We've been very happy with him and he's a little clown and loves to play.

A maine coon, definitely. They are quiet, docile cats, wonderful with children.

I've had my male neutered maine coon for 13 years, same age as my child. Never had ANY problems with him, even before he was fixed.
