Harlem (thankfully) is not as bad as it used to be, HOWEVER, realize no matter where you go in NYC, is it ever 100%. I walked on a small st in Harlem at 1:30 Am scared out of mind, my g/f acted like everything was fine. Nothing happened, but there is something spooky about being in Manhattan & nobody is around you, it's a lil disorienting. Also, be forewarned 1 guy (He was white) got killed (ran into street & got hit by car) by being chased by some petty thugs trying to get his money, but that was only 1 time, it's similar to me walking around Howard Beach or bensonhurst at night, I'll probably be fine, but I wouldn't risk it.
