When I went to Europe I only traveled with enough cash to last me until I could get to an ATM machine. Your ATM card should work over there as long as you keep in mind the exchange rate. Then you don't have to worry about finding somwhere to exchange money.

You should bring $300 with you, half in $20 and half in $10 bills, which you should exchange into British pounds during the week. (Traveller cheques are unnecessary, unless you can get them for free.) I used my credit card (VISA is preferred, not AMEX) for most things, and you can withdraw cash with your ATM card (if necessary). Be sure to keep your passport, airline ticket, money and credit cards in separate wallets. If pickpocketed, they won't get everything at once. (Make a copy of your passport and airline itinerary, and leave it with a family member at home.)

As much as you can carry. The pound is going to pound you. I typically don't travel with cash. I get all my cash at cash machines. There are cash machines at Heathrow, Gatwick and they can be found all around the city.
Check out the Oanda site I've attached. It's the best currency converter I've found. The FX Cheat Sheet is one of my favorites.
