Call up your local Police Station and let them run the Serial Number through the National Crime Data Base! If it's stolen you will have to most likely have to give it up unless it has been over 7 years, in which case there is a slight possibility that you can keep it! (I know of one actual case of this happening.) If it is stolen you may be charged with theft, receiving stolen property, or possession of stolen property. The best thing is not to buy a gun from anyone besides a legitimate, licensed, gun dealer!! I hope this has been helpful!

You can check for a serial number and ask the local PD to check it. However, there is no way to know for sure unless you buy a brand new one from a reliable source.
