I often notice that I tense up my upper body when I run. Maybe you do that, too and that would make you sore the next day.

Your body isn't used to it. BUt in due time it will be. When you get back from running, even in the hot summer days, drink a bottle or two of Crystsal LIght or even a bottle of water.

Every time you stress (workout) a muscle the muscle produces lactic acid (a muscle waste product). As you can guess from the name (acid) it will burn and feel sore. As your muscles get stronger and more conditioned they will grow to become better at expelling lactic acid and less will remain in the muscle, hence you will become less prone to muscle soreness after a workout.

Load up on protein, your muscles will recover faster. Chicken, fish, etc. You may also want to get some potassium in your diet as well, like banannas. And don't forget lots of water.
