I have not seen or heard from my ex in 8 years. We broke up on good terms. But, I recently received a letter from him stating crazy things like he thinks I am yelling and him in public places, thinks I care about how much money he makes, etc. This letter is very 'angry'. He does not personally threaten my health or life but it is scary to know that this guy might now have a drinking problem, is writing me this letter 8 years later assuming crazy things and mentioning names of people I don't even know.

This would not normally bother me as much is I didn't have a child to think about and know that he owns a hand gun and knows how to use it.

Should I get a restraining order against him? He knows where I work.

Take your letter to a lawyer or the police station and tell them your concerns. I can't believe that they wouldn't recommend for you to get a restraining order.

Unfortunately, you don't have enough cause to get an actual restraining order (order of protection) because he did not make any threats of specific harm to you and did not make agressive acts towards you--this is a legal issue, actually. Is it possible to contact his family or friends and let them know that he wrote this letter to you and is sounding paranoid and unstable? I would keep your phone handy and lock your doors (which I'm sure you do) and let people know what's going on at work and neighbors, in case they see the guy and you can call the police at that point. Then you can probably get a temporary order of protection (usually for 30 days) and then go you both show up in court to see if a year long order of protection can be granted for you. I'm sorry that's not very helpful--it sounds like a very creepy situation.

i imagine you want to have some actual information of the stalking to get a restraining order. yet both way, you may visit the police and document a record antagonistic to him, that way you've taken some measures. you may also only ignore him for a lengthy time period, this works on some human beings, in the adventure that they don't get the interest they prefer, they develop into bored / supply up.

I'm not sure you can get a restraining order yet, but call your local battered women's hotline or shelter now and tell them about it. They have volunteers available around the clock. They will discuss it with you and if there is something you can do now, they will discuss this with you. Don't wait. He sounds paranoid, which is not related to reality. What he sees is reality to him. Do you trust your supervisor at work to discuss it with him or her? Mainly, if something happens and you have to do something. The volunteer at the hotline might have ideas about this too.

You can apply for a restraining order based on being afraid for your life of someone. I dont know if it will get approved, but Good Luck to you anyways.

I think you should. If you feel threatened is for something, eh? You are the one that went out with him and it seems like you know in the deep that you should. Go with your instincts
