what hints does a guy give off in the first few dates that indicates he isn't the pampering type? All these guys talk about treating a woman like a princess and spoiling her but the ones I meet don't seem to even want to buy coffee.

He might indeed be the pampering type, but only for a woman he really likes. So if the guy isn't interested in making you feel pampered, then he might be thinking that you're not the one for him.

If he tries to force you to order off the daily specials at a restaurant, that's a red flag. If he figures 15% of the bill and tries to make exact change, red flag. If he wants to take you to a movie, but it HAS to be a weekday matinee, red flag.

Now, what's your definition of pampering? If he does the best he can with what he has, then an honest effort is there and he should be given credit for that. If, however, you're a gold digger, then no one is ever going to satisfy you as long as there's still an unspent dime in his pocket. Not saying you are, but pointing that out.

And about that coffee, if he doesn't want to pay for coffee then he should take you to Mickey D's from 5-7 AM for a free coffee! Yeah, it's a small, but maybe he'll disguise himself, go inside again, and get another one and give it to you. TWO smalls! That's like a medium! Wow! Can you detect the sarcasm there?!

A person (man or woman) is cheap if they have the means and spend lavishly on themselves but then turn around and pinch pennies with you. If they're cheap with everyone including themselves, then they may just be thrifty. However, if they're genuinely interested in you, they will find a way to win you over, money or no money.

A man who is cheap has money in the bank.
A woman who doesn't like a cheap man, will be lonely for a long time.

well, what kind of restaurant did he take you to? a nice place, or Denny's? pay attention to the tip he leaves. the way he treats the waitress, the comments about the food. all these things will tell you if he is cheap. good luck!!

Does this cheap man shower you in love? Because that should be enough.

Pay attention to the way he's dressed. If he won't spend money on himself, he dam-sho won't spend it on you.
