to answer your question, yes, animals have been used medically for centuries. leeches were used in midevil times (not always to the benifit of the ailed) and are still used today, small birds were used in coal mines to detect gas, dogs and monkeys are used as helpers to the handicapped, the list goes on and on...

and as an answer to the rest of the question, i think that it is mostly the idiotic love for anyone who will pet them and the physical contact that makes people feel better when playing/petting/bieng with dogs...

ps: i love dogs. grew up with about 5 and am now getting one myself, so dont take the idiotic part wrong, its one of dogs best qualities...if they were like cats, i would dislike them too...

Pets are a valuable source of companionship and love for many people. Older people in nursing/elder-care homes benefit greatly from having regular visits from 'petting cats, dogs and rabbits' etc and look forward to the visits from them. Wonderful therapy for those who may not be getting many visitors otherwise!

They also can have a sixth sense and know when their owners are having health problems ... one of my cats has always appeared when I am about to have an asthma or chronic pain attack, and will not leave me until she is sure I am ok.

Of course. Have u ever heard the story when this guy's wife was in a coma and a dog appeared at his front door? He took the dog in and every nite he let it out in a 7 ft. fenced area. 15 min. later the dog wasn't there. It couldn't have jumped and it didn't dig. The dog helped the man with his anxiety about his wife. The wife got out of the coma and heard about the dog. One night she locked it in their room. In the morning it wasn't there. It couldn't have gotten out! It was an angel dog. This is true. It helped someone in the hard part of their life and then just disappeared.
Animals are truly special.

I would say that animals are a joy to everyone, especially the elderly and people with disabilities. I am majoring in psychology and I have seen animal therapy work for children. It's great!!!

I have a beagle and I love her to pieces!!! I adopted her from the pound then saved her life (she had parvo, but it was successfully treated). She's my companion and my confidante. I love her to death and I don't know what I would do with out her! :)

My Mom just turned 80, and lives with me. She's ok, but a little slow getting places, and has a cane. Lately since I got the puppy. In the morning, the puppys jumps on her when she wakes up. I told her, Isn't it good to wake up laughing every day. She said, now I know why they take the animals to senior homes. They make you happy. So keep up the good job. Thanks

Yes. I worked in special ed and took my daughter's pekingese once per month. Even the kids who couldn't walk or talk had some reaction to him. It's an awesome feeling, bringing joy into the life of another person.

The strongest case for the existence of unconditional love outside the mother--child thing on the planet is a person's pet !!!

All I know is this:
Our Min Pin, Corky, meets me at the door every day after work. I might have had a bad day(and I have them a lot) but his excited greeting makes me feel better.
