my mom and i had a flight that was overbooked in st louis a few years ago so when we finally go on the 9pm one she got 1st class and i got the VERY back of coach...she told them what the deal was and they moved the guy next to me to 1st class and her back to his seat.....they usually try to be accomodating for family members on the same flights. just ask an attendant and tell him or her about your situation. they should be able to help you guys out.

Seats that are blocked usually are at the bulkhead or emergency exits.
The bulkheads are usually reserved for families with very young children.
Emergency exit seats cannot usually be booked ahead of time. The airlines usually require the occupant of the seat, in the event of an emergency, to be capable tof operating the emergency exit door and this can only be verified at check in. So ask when checking in and check in early!

Even though the airlines list the seats blocked or occupied, that doesnt mean its taken. I am a Airline Customer Service Agent and you may request to sit together. Almost every time somebody has asked me, I have found them seats together. Don't worry, you'll sit together.

Most of the time, you get on the plane, tell a steward or stewardess about your situation, and they'll go around either finding two seats or ask people if they'll move. Only one person would have to move.
